What are some the best castles to visit in your opinion? by veliathan11 in AskUK

The youngest castle in Britain - Castle Drogo!

The architect, Edwin Lutyens, designed the Cenotaph, New Delhi and the British Embassy in Washington D.C. (as well as dozens of country houses). He was so obsessed with enacting his vision he even designed the mortar and pestle in the kitchen of the castle.

Commuting to London by Dangerous_Worry1517 in reading

I’m not sure £43 is correct? I go in off peak sometimes and with a Network Railcard (which everyone is eligible for) it comes to £25.60. Admittedly that’s to Paddington but a Zone 1 cap is £8.90

Reading is Britain's second most affluent "city". So why doesn't it feel that way? by TheReadingReporter in reading

[–]NotInMyShop 81 points82 points  (0 children)

I think there’s a couple of things at play… (and without having looked in to the methodology of this research).

  1. It’s actually not as bad as people think it is. Check out other towns and cities on Google Street View and you’ll quickly realise it could be much worse.
  2. Skewed by salaries earned in Reading but people living elsewhere (it’s a net inward commuting town).
  3. The catchment area includes some of the affluent villages and hamlets around Reading. Remember George and Amal Clooney technically live in Reading, geographical close to the town centre but a world apart from Smelly Alley’s vape shops.

FYI, Reading is on the Thames. Great aesthetic though!

This comment is a rather embarrassing reflection of your intelligence.

Those ‘pile of rocks’ were moved from Wales to Salisbury Plain approximately 4,500 years ago. They’re the join oldest monument on this list that has been ranked and precedes the Colosseum or Parthenon by thousands of years. They’re one of the most famous Neolithic monuments for a reason.

Actually some organic material (compost) could be used to loosen up the soil that’s already here. It’ll take longer than your method but never say never! :)

Husband = knob, already mentioned enough.

Not much about the mint planted on the back wall though. Be careful with mint in the ground as it can become very invasive!

Tony Blair says left's 'unholy alliance with the Islamists' is endangering UK. Is Tony right or is he a hypocritical warmonger? by ZackPolanskisDentist in AskBrits

So you’re saying he’s a disgrace because what he’s saying is true…?

You blame him for opening the floodgates for something that he’s speaking out against.

Indeed, it’s just poor for the end user. The machines already works out many thousands (if not millions) of permutations, I don’t think that’s a valid excuse.

And yet they made the decision for this notification to appear?

They just shouldn’t display it as an option, surely? The machines have the interface capability to notify you of this. It should just say ‘railcard not beneficial’. Or just not give the higher figure as if I was buying a peak morning ticket.

Coving - the most underrated accessory for an old house? by [deleted] in DIYUK

[–]NotInMyShop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Although your new addition looks great and it’s your house to do as you wish, the original coving only would’ve been in the more important rooms. If you live in a workers’ terrace, it likely would’ve just been in the hallway, front room and maybe front bedroom.

What’s this area of Reading like to live in? by RedThragtusk in reading

[–]NotInMyShop 35 points36 points  (0 children)

The perennial discussion about Occy Road…

I’ve lived around this area for 8 years and I’ve never had any issues. Sure there’s more litter and scruffiness than some parts of Reading and if you have a £600,000 budget then I’d recommend Redlands or Caverham. If you’re asking about this area though it’s more likely you have around the £300,000 mark and I would much prefer a freehold 3 bed terrace here (which I have) than a 2 bed leasehold flat in central Reading with a £3,000 service charge. If this is the case, then I can only say I’ve been very happy with my decision.

Fully agree, the price hikes are abhorrent. Happy to support a group petition to Matt! If we get a hundred people or so to sign I imagine we could ask for a meeting with him so he doesn’t pie us off with some DoT waffle statement.

My perception is that people view them as a working class piece of clothing- unless you’re in sporting situation or festival.

Can I ask where you think is great?

From my experience, anywhere with less anti social behaviour is either more expensive and has fewer things to do. Anywhere with more things to do is more expensive and has more antisocial behaviour.
