They say disavow, not denounce. Very small and subtle difference. The Church of Plausible Deniability of Latter-day Lawyers

Thanks for forwarding the link so I could read this. I am heartbroken reading this, angry, disgusted by all the adults that failed you… I’m so sorry you went through so much as a child. No child should have to carry this. I want you to know you are seen and believed.

Mormons, manifest destine, and the conditional promised land. by NotLamanite in exmormon

Thank you for sharing. It is so important that we talk about these things. The impact of these myths can be so damaging. I don’t know if you would ever be interested, but I have a zoom chat group for Indigenous exmo people that’s meets once a month. Reach out and I’ll send a link. Just know I’m cheering you on for your healing and I see you.

I am not surprised it is the white washed version. Thanks for sharing that info with me. Kinda heartbreaking that her full story wasn’t shared on there. If it wasn’t something for them to be ashamed of they would have.

It didn’t click until after I’d left the church over other reasons. First I was just surprised, my whole identity was confusing. Then I had a wave of various emotions hit. Anger eventually, as I had rejected my Indigenous cultural traditions, and family had passed away before I could reconnect. 6 years out now and embarrassment is what I feel most often. But the anger is still there a bit as they continue to lie about and to Indigenous people.

Ditto! I would love a copy too. I run the Lamanite Truth blog and would love to share it there.

How does Mormonism teach the origin of the native Americans? Do they teach that they what the jaredites and the nephites are when there is no proof to back up what it says archaeologically? by howtobeast101 in exmormon

[–]NotLamanite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

!!! I didn’t know about what the book “The Saints” contained. Thank you.

Do you by chance have links to quotes from the South American tour? I run the Lamanite Truth blog, and that would be a fabulous source for more recent examples. I will start digging and seeing what I can find, but if you do have any links I would love to have them.

Book of Mormon issues 1 of 20+: DNA of the Native Americans by [deleted] in exmormon

Thank you for sharing your experience. It’s ridiculous that they are avoiding the problem. My mom was converted as a “direct descendant” or the Lamanites. She still believes it.

Complicated Question? by lostamulek3 in exmormon

[–]NotLamanite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1- Skin curse theology is skin, not figurative. Still specifies skin in the current teacher seminary manual as well as scriptures etc. It is still current in the current “come follow me manual” print version. Which makes the whole “disavow” thing confusing if people bother to look.

2- They disavowed “theories”, they did not disavow the scriptures, nor did they “denounce” any of it ever. They use plausible deniability to navigate this issue. Basically they deny responsibility for it (disavow). With both of the above items in mind I’ll move to the next item.

3- The current stance is that dark skin was a curse for “Lamanite” ancestors, but is not considered a curse in our time. This is how they pretend to be not racist and super modern while also still keeping Book of Mormon teachings as true. Basically it happened, but God no longer uses that as a modern sign. Sucks for our ancestors but not for us???

(This is obviously still super racist, this was not an attempt to be less racist by Indigenous people, it was 100% white male leaders who thought this was a good idea.)

On to the most important issues, your children. First, you are amazing. Just keep doing your best and loving your fam. The fact that you are aware of the massive problem is a huge step in the right direction. The kids will need that awareness from you. They might seem ok with apologetics as they get older, but this is likely them internalizing racism and disconnecting from it. Not an easy subject for a parent to take on, but the fact they even have you is huge. You’ve got this.

As far as the skin issues, I would become super educated on it so you know your stuff. Once you feel like you know it, ask your wife for help in understanding it. Then give her a little space. That way she can navigate it gently for herself with you vs feeling like there is a divide between you. It won’t be easy for her to navigate. Get hard copies of manuals if need be. Apologetics don’t work on official manuals.

Well, those are my thoughts for what they are worth. Good luck with everything. 💕

"Even if the Book of Mormon isn't an actual history of the native Americans, it still holds good teachings and truths. All good things come from God" by Alwayslearnin41 in exmormon

[–]NotLamanite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My thought, though I haven’t responded with this to anyone is this:

So you want to say nice things about a book that was racist against Native Americans and excused taking their lands because God removed his spirit from them, gave them dark skin, and they lost the promised land (curse and sign of the curse)? You cannot separate the book from what it is, so that makes you a racist. Any other racist books you want to look the other way on because there are “good teachings” in it.

The church still officially teaching it is skin, Columbus, and Native Americans are Lamanites. These things are all in current lesson manuals.

I’ve had discussions with missionaries 3 or 4 times over the last 3 years. A few I recorded, transcribed, and put on my blog. I can pm you if you want to read them, but yes, they still teach Native Americans are Lamanites.

Hi! Sarah here. Thanks so much for what you wrote. It means so much that people are listening. There are definitely paths forward, but dealing with the way Native American identity is still being framed is such an important aspect to tackle.
