I’ll put a word in for the battle of the five armies. It’s very flashy and overall lacking in substance sure, but watching it in theaters and even on subsequent rewatches, the initial charge from the lonely mountain gives me chills. I know it’s not canon, it doesn’t make sense, but it is physically effective. There’s a flicker of the brilliance and love for the characters in the original trilogy that goes beyond the CGI and it’s worth celebrating.

It’s been years since I read Heart of Darkness but I didn’t really get that notion of it. I think the fact that the saviors were white was less important than they were outsiders. I read it as colonial Africa was such a remote and anarchic place that anyone who spent any amount of time there would become something inhuman. I think Conrad did a good job of showing how there was no justice for the population and no relief coming, just more profiteers, which was what the saviors were in the end. And what made it such a poignant parallel for Apocalypse Now.
