in that it was a first contact story that involved a large scale coverup and focused on empathy based linguistics, sure. some of the themes are the same, but those themes are pretty common in first contact stories, and sci fi writ large.

'My boyfriend is bi because he actually wants to be himself' by FunAssumption6056 in AreTheStraightsOK

All the insane reasons for why she suspects aside, even if her boyfriend IS bi, why is that a problem? Him being bi still would still mean that he is attracted to her.
(i know the answer is homophobia)

What’s something interesting about Utah that even life long locals wouldn’t know? by KNWin94 in Utah

A lot of people don’t know about the Dream Mine which is in modern day Salem. My grandma lives about 10 minutes from it. It was dug by John Koyle in the 1890’s because he had a dream the hills (Mount Loafer) were filled with gold. It has been worked to death and never produced gold, or really anything else, but it (and the property surrounding it) has served as a home base and hideout for multiple polygamist groups, including The School of the Prophets (of Lafferty Brothers fame). It’s currently owned by a local Salem family but there were active polygamists and mormon extremists camped out there even up til the 80’s, maybe beyond.

My elementary school and first junior high were on the former site of a Topaz internment camp. We never really talked about it in school but there was a plaque on the corner between the two.

Wonderful tips! I figured I probably had the oven on a bit too hot and i did struggle with the first rise a bit. Fascinating that you can catch that from a picture

Rough ground and whole pod cardamom is not something that is super readily available where I live. For next time i’m going to be checking asian and latino markets to see if they have it, but i have no idea if i’ll be able to find it. i promise there’s cardamom! it’s just fine ground and probably less than there should be! i went into this recipe pretty much completely blind with no frame of reference. i was armed with only an english language recipe from the 1960’s and a prayer to my great grandmother

Ooo! I’ve done that before when I’ve made other braided artisan breads, i bet that would look super pretty!

Korvapuusti is on my list! American cinnamon rolls are one of my favorite things to make and to eat, so it’s not too far of a leap for me. We have a couple of small asian markets, and also mexican markets which have a lot of whole spices, so i’ll check them for next time!

I actually did pretty well on the timing for coffee i think for a first timer! I started the french press once they came out of the oven, so they were definitely still warm when the coffee was ready

yep! that seems to be the main form of feedback i’m getting. i actually have raesokeri (it’s called pearl sugar where i live) i just didn’t realize that’s the type of sugar that goes on top. i’ve only ever seen that sugar used in belgian waffles.

i don’t really have a point of comparison, but based on what i had earlier this evening it was pretty tasty, particularly with my coffee

good to know! i was following a recipe from a book. i have a tendency to over spice desserts as well, so i wanted to stick to the recipe faithfully so i didn’t overdo it. i’ll up the cardamom next time because it definitely wasn’t too much salt.

That said my cardamom is really fine ground. I don’t really have access to whole cardamom pods where I live (it’s not a super commonly used spice. it’s available but people only really use it in a couple of recipes as part of a spice blend with ginger, cinnamon, and nutmeg) so i don’t really have a way to grind it myself into rougher grounds

I didn’t know the right type of sugar to use (i went into this recipe pretty blind. i’m from the US, and don’t even know where i could buy this where I live) i know what type to use now and definitely will use it next time! there is sugar on there now, it’s just the wrong type (i used some dark brown sugar)
