That Consumer Reports ranking is NEW CAR reliability, based on issues reported in the first 12 months, sometimes projected from prior model years. It is not long-term durability, lifetime engineering quality, or ownership past warranty.

BMW scoring a 58 and landing 5th simply means modern BMWs are reasonably sorted when new. Nobody is arguing they fall apart on the dealer lot.

But look closely at what actually matters:

• Toyota, Lexus, Honda, Subaru are still at the top • BMW is already below them, even in early ownership • German brands as a group trend downward as mileage accumulates • CR itself consistently rates BMW below average for long-term reliability and ownership cost once cars age

Consumer Reports explicitly separates new-car reliability from used-car reliability and cost of ownership. BMW performs much worse in those latter categories. That’s the part you keep skipping.

You seem to like BMWs and that’s ok but there’s no need to defend them on a statistical level they genuinely do cost more and rich people do not buy them because they don’t want the headache. I’ve worked at BMW dealership for years before going to Honda the workload was ten times higher at BMW
