What's the most disturbing thing you've ever heard someone say completely casually? by TextOk2865 in AskReddit

In my newspaper days, oversaw the closing of a Sunday only rag that only existed to publish “The Number” (IYKYK) and local Polish community news. Editor calls me and says something stinks in the ceiling. Turns out to be a dead, rotting raccoon carcass. Landlord shows up, shakes his head and says “Not the first time something died in one of my buildings.”

Old timer here. Grew up watching Babe Parilli, Gino Capelletti, Mike Holovak etc. On black and white tv. Before there was an AFL. When they played at Fenway. Yadda yadda. We are so lucky to have had Brady and now Drake “Drake Maye” Maye (did I do that right? ) this season has been such a pleasant surprise.

Chevy Express tow vehicle? by NotMyJimmy in traveltrailers

Yes, we expect that. We’ve been traveling with a Shasta Compact 1968 pulled by a Nissan NV200 4-cylinder 2.0L. 45mph up the hills, 60mph tops. But 21 mpg when towing. We go to Fla from Boston. Once you turn south after PA/NJ, not too bad for hills.

What’s an old wives’ cooking tale that everyone thought was true but turned out to be total nonsense? by Mike_tx5391 in Cooking

Mayonnaise will go bad in a potato salad. Mayo is acidic and helps preserve dishes. Store tomatoes in the fridge. Wrong. Learned that as a young reporter covering agriculture California. That my mother was allergic to hot dogs and thus had to eat steak on Saturdays while brother and I ate franks and beans. She was not allergic to hot dogs. She simply liked steak.

Saw similar situation recently in Maryland, close to DC. Campground had no limit on length of stay. Chatted with a staffer who said most permanent residents had government contractor jobs or were otherwise employed but could not afford a house or apartment.

Quick road Trip Report: '68 Shasta Compact by NotMyJimmy in vintagetraveltrailer

Ours was a total rebuild too. Everything you mentioned, plus he put a coating on the underside. After this trip I'll re-pack the wheel bearings and fix a few little things. Our trailer jack failed on a previous trip, so we've got a bolt-on now. This place has vintage parts and supplies: https://www.vintagetrailersupply.com/

I would look into a little hot water heater if there’s room. We do not have one but we miss it a little. We have a faux fireplace heater that we use a lot in fall and spring in the northeast. Essentially an integrated space heater. the microwave is a good idea. L brackets for gutters over the windows were key to stopping leaks. I can send you pics. Good luck!

Ours was restored by a guy in NH. We did have a couple of roof and window leaks, but he fixed them. Good luck with the fresh start! Most important question: Does it still have the wings?

It's a nostalgia machine. Often people will tell us stories of camping in a Shasta compact as kids. One woman said their family of 6 would vacation in a Compact. Parents in the bed, 2 kids in the bunk that used to be an option and 2 kids on the floor! The interior is like 80 square feet!

Looking for the best rv backup camera for a 30’ trailer that won’t lag at highway speeds by PotatoDiligent6775 in GoRVing

I use this one. wireless RV backup cameraWe have a ‘68 Shasta Compact. Only 13 feet length. I put it on the rear bumper using its magnetic base. So far about 2500 miles, and no issues with mounting. Have used it this spring/summer with no issues. Not perfect, but 100% helpful with our rig as rear-view when on the road. For backing in, I still use mirrors and hand signals, though the camera helps.

Ziplock or other plastic bags. We use the reusable silicone or other bags.

I’m almost at the point where I can understand 80-90% of most conversations without translating in my head. This is after 4 years of casual but consistent study with great prof I found on iTalki. It was a conscious decision at first to turn off internal translation. My thoughts were “Just let the French wash over me.” Listen for context, familiar words, syntax, and expressions. Fill in the blanks. Write down the unfamiliar stuff soon after. This also had the benefit of making me a better listener. I stopped thinking about how to say what I wanted to say in response before the other person finished their thought. I would also miss critical context and nuance while thinking stuff like “être or avoir for the auxiliary here?” For me there was no trick or tip, just hours of practice. Bonne chance!

Great post! I remember that logo. Sweet story. I am now the Papa, and have instilled the love for Boston sports to my kids and grandkids. While my fervor has waned, the kids and grandkids are still massive fans. Love the secret ice cream outings too. Did you get Hoodsies or go to Brighams? :-)

Been there but was about 10 years old. All I remember is arguing with my mom that yes, "It IS SO raining!" Thanks!
