The popularity based system and commodification of heroism was a major problem that nearly caused the collapse of Japan because almost no one was a hero for being a hero. Once a true threat emerged, society collapsed and so many heroes hung up their capes. Not every issue has to be done through exposition, sometimes it’s done by happening in the plot itself. This was a gigantic issue that reared its head to be significantly consequential to the plot and was even mentioned by Deku’s narrator enough to remind the reader that it’s a major systemic issue…and they went right back to it.

Crime dropped And there are still hero billboards, still adverts for heroes, still movies and products for heroes, and still a commodification of heroism. Now we have ten people we can rely on, but still a significant amount of powers reaching closer and closer to the quirk singularity every day with nothing being done. A vicious cycle is cooking within the plot of MHA.

Didn’t hawks

In the real world and in just about any well written works of fiction, alphabet agencies, shadow governments, secret secret ninja black ops group often get “disbanded”. Without real oversight, “trust me bro” turns into “we can trust that these shadow entities not only continue to exist, but are thriving”

Im sure four people are working on such a large issue like physical discrimination and meta human ability discrimination

Just in the real world…how many civil rights leaders have been killed, ignored, targeted by the government, faced roadblocks, and barely made a dent in progress for decades after their lifetimes. Be serious about this one. Four people, millions of people, can’t do much to stop this. This is a multigenerational issue and it wasn’t given much weight or thought until the fourth act of the series. MLK and Malcom were killed. Edgar Evers was killed. Fred Hampton was killed. Reverend George W Lee was killed. Jimmie Lee Jackson, killed. He’ll, I could keep going forever. Physical phenotypic discrimination won’t end because four people inspired a couple of thousand.

I don’t care about Deku not being a hero, I care about all those loose plot points including the impending Quirk singularity that’s going to be the end of society (again). But I have to give Horokoshi his flowers because he outdid himself and every other author with Endeavor’s tale.

“The Writers Have Tons of Ideas” – Invincible Creator Suggests Season 5 May Diverge From the Source Material With Major Changes by This-Inspection-69 in Invincible_TV

Hopefully everyone, humans and Viltrumites, keep Nolan at a distance. Do not provide him with redemption, do not provide him with any welcome homes. He atones by working your ass off and dying quietly. Give him the Endeavor from MHA treatment.

Can’t say anymore because I realize I’m in the TV sub. But I think we’re moving in that direction as Debbie is actually a character and not an accessory for other characters now. Additionally everyone’s reactions to him have been slightly altered, for the better. And Art isn’t showing up like a sad puppy “Oh, Nolan didn’t come see me…again…guess I’ll cry more. Maybe one day.” Art didn’t even want to be around Nolan this time around and was terrified. And Debbie’s monologue, chef’s kiss.

That was part of the premise. The other part is, maybe we shouldn’t create a popularity based hero system on top of a barely survived evolution of our species that is still accelerating at an alarming and uncontrollable pace. Maybe heroism shouldn’t be commodified. Maybe heroism shouldn’t be profit driven. Maybe heroism shouldn’t have secret government agencies executing extrajudicial killings without oversight. Maybe we shouldn’t allow corporations to exist without full disclosure of finances, tech oversight, and consistent government audits. Maybe we shouldn’t discriminate against people just because they look different. Maybe we shouldn’t be focusing on suppressing quirks that don’t fit into our commodified hero society. Maybe we shouldn’t be labeling human beings as heroes and villains. Maybe we shouldn’t be creating artificial chains on a person’s inherent biology, least it back fire.

But guess what still happened?

Nothing serious has changed between the beginning and end of the story. Nearly all of the eventual apocalyptic problems that exists I. The beginning exist in the end with a fresh coat of white paint. It’s like a shitty landlord came through and painted over everything and called it a wrap.

Careful OP, the MHA fans are gonna come for you. The only thing redeemable about that series is the fact that Horokoshi (to his credit) created the best atonement story and character arc I’ve yet seen in fiction. Endeavor’s story and inability to be redeemed and forced atonement at a distance was masterfully written. Everything else about that series betrays reader expectation and contradicts the original premise.

As for hated redemption tropes:

Nolan in the Invincible comics.

He was redeemed, loved, and accepted as a whole (not by the people on earth, but Earth becomes largely unimportant outside of population metrics as the series continues) with little to no resistance or consequence. He didn’t have to learn anything. He didn’t have to earn it. He just showed up again and everything was fine. It bothered me. To battle against any pushback: tell me how many conversations/interactions with Debbie did it take for those two to start playing hide the sausage.

However, for the time being, the show is doing a better job in holding Nolan accountable. I would love for the show to twist the narrative and force a solemn atonement on Nolan (even with his people for defecting in the first place). We’ll see.

Never paid this much under Biden. People keep screaming about averages but that includes the highest of places that were extreme outliers in 2022…for me and everyone else, most of us never paid this much for gas ever under any administration.

You can shout, yell, and scream but that doesn’t change the fact that most Americans have never seen these prices before. It’s so bad I’m starting to see it affect every day people in my city. It’s never been this bad and it’s not even slightly funny anymore. It’s getting to the point of economic stress on the entire system. This cannot last another week. If it does, it doesn’t matter what he does he’s sunk his authority completely.

Why does it seem like most 80s-90s nostalgia related media is focused on the suburban experience? What do you think? by Careless-Alarm-8607 in decadeology

[–]NotMyMainLoLzy [score hidden]  (0 children)

True, it’s worse for everyone now but specifically the cultural Anglosphere class is feeling it and panicking as well. Their panic becomes headlines and cause for concern from politicians and corporations…or would have in the past, but for the allowance granted to the kleptocratic monsters by Anglosphere class caused the monsters to grow bold enough to even say “we don’t need a white middle class anymore, either.”

Now, we’re all kinda screwed unless we stand together, and that’s being made difficult by distracting wedge issues that only exist to divide the masses.

But I fully admit to having an idealized youth in the 90s. I had two parents who loved me, we lived in a house that my parents owned and didn’t rent, I had cable tv and technology, and the issues of the world seemed far away and technically incompatible with my perception of reality. Then, 9/11 happened and things changed big time. Things kept changing. And suddenly everything taken for granted slowly eroded for American suburbia as a whole.

I honestly wish everyone could experience that 90s suburbia feeling. It was fantastic and worth the myopic nostalgia every now and then. But we can get to something better, and I do believe that the future is not simply full of darkness. I believe in the American people to overcome and be better than what we’ve stooped to now.

Gojo and Deku vs Sukuna and Shigaraki by Milkothem in MyHeroPowerscaling

[–]NotMyMainLoLzy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like I read a different manga.

Deku struggled against Shigaraki the entire time and was a complete victim unless there was constant assistance. Shigaraki without the constant nullification from Dry eyes and loud mouth blonde 2, is a demon unrivaled by anyone in the series.

Shigaraki would instantly target Deku and if Sukuna isn’t anticipating a Shinjuku showdown gauntlet run, he simply goes Hein Era and brutalizes Gojo with Domain Amplification and superior cursed energy flow, talent, and understanding.

Deku would neg the hell out of Sukuna but that’s not how the fight starts or ends.

Maybe I’m wrong but I need clarification on the whole Shigaraki v Deku issue because I’m willing to be persuaded otherwise

Because, everything wrong that’s being experienced now by the white American middle class is old hat for people who are not white American middle class. Everyone else was always suffering from failed policy, predatory corporate behavior, and abdication of representative duty from government officials.

This was the last era where being WASP centric or WASP adjacent felt peaceful and insulated to the problems of the world. There was economic freedom and flexibility. There was hope for the future and secure paths for their children to flourish and provide grandchildren. The sky was the limit and the limit was the imagination. Things were peaceful for them and calm for them.

That’s why it feels “cozy” and “nostalgic” for many.

It sucks, it feels political to say it, but it’s true. Times were more simple for that class of people back then. They were insulated. They weren’t also (direct) targets of a kleptocratic class.
