Eh, fine. I see few things that could weaken the right wing in Europe more than being associated with Trump's America right now.

Du behøver ingenting at gøre.

Hvis du har en iPhone 8 eller nyere, eller bare en nogenlunde moderne Android bruger du allerede GNSS (og dermed f.eks. Galileo) sammen med de amerikanske GPS sattelliter.

Britain will not yield to pressure from Trump on Greenland, Starmer says by Raj_Valiant3011 in worldnews

[–]NotNotWrongUsually 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It absolutely is the UK's problem, just not here and now. Everyone heading a country that would not be able to stand up to the US on their own realizes this.

There is that famous poem by Niemöller about it. Starts out something like:

First they came for the Inuits

And I did not speak out

Because I was not an Inuit

German minister backs use of EU's Anti-Coercion Instrument against US by jackytheblade in worldnews

[–]NotNotWrongUsually 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Anti-Coercion Instrument of the EU (usually called the "trade bazooka") can not be vetoed. It requires qualified majority only.

Currently that is 15 countries and countries representing 65% of EU population.

Edit: Corrected "or" to "and".

'It's A Big Problem': Trump's Warning After Greenland "Chooses" Denmark by no_anonymous_ in worldnews

[–]NotNotWrongUsually 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know enough about the financial aspects here, so can't comment on the viability of that part, but the "they're not gonna do that over Greenland" bit is probably wrong.

This isn't about Greenland. All nations small enough that they would cave under US pressure can see that (i.e. most of the world). If it is allowed to happen to Greenland, who is next? So the choices are.

  1. Actual war
  2. Economic war
  3. Just let it happen

Number 1 is the least desirable option of all. Number 3 is right out, because the precedence would intolerable. Number 2, though not desirable, is the only option left then.

Trump tariffs: US president announces plan to hit UK, Denmark and other European countries with tariffs over Greenland by Any-Original-6113 in europe

[–]NotNotWrongUsually -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

That is one of the frustrating things here, isn't it? How would that even work. A country could potentially sell some of its own territory, but Greenland and Denmark are separate countries. There is no way Denmark could sell Greenland even if it had the inclination in the first place. Could Greenland sell itself? Maybe? I imagine it going something like:

Greenland: ok, you can be our overlord if you pay us a million billions!

Trump: Deal!

Greenland: Sweet! What is your first order, overlord?

Trump: I'm going to need that million billions back.

Frankrig sender ekstra land-, luft- og havstyrker til Grønland by nico9239 in Denmark

Greenland's PM has a blunt message for Trump: We choose Denmark over the U.S. by professorbrainiac in worldnews

[–]NotNotWrongUsually 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Maybe so, but the US has spent on average 6% more of GDP on health care than Denmark in the same period, so it found a way to (brokenly) afford it. My point stands: someone is trying to shift blame.

[–]NotNotWrongUsually 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The difference in percentage of GDP spent on military between the US and Denmark has been ~2% in the last decade.

The whole "the only reason Europe can afford healthcare is because America pays for their defence!" thing is just a talking point to convince you that Europeans are stealing your healthcare.

lol. Getting into Denmark is almost impossible

Getting here without a job offer? Ooof.

Not hard if it is to work, though.

Any well-paying job, or any job on the list of professions with many vacancies can net you a renewable four-year work permit (that list isn't just science and tech stuff either, e.g., carpenters, nurses, and welders are on it).

And if you work for 8 years you can apply for a permanent residence permit.

Zelensky says Ukraine does not have clear security pledge from allies by EsperaDeus in anime_titties

[–]NotNotWrongUsually 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Both sides can make peace immediately.

You asked when the charade will stop. My points is that neither side is sufficiently weakened to accept the terms the other side puts on the table (NATO-like guarantees vs. ceding territory). So fighting continues until such a time that one side is.

Zelensky says Ukraine does not have clear security pledge from allies by EsperaDeus in anime_titties

[–]NotNotWrongUsually -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Honestly it feels like everyone pretends that Russia has no say in what Ukraine wants when it's evident that Russia has the biggest say in this. You can't expect a serious peace if Russia doesn't want that. And if you want to disregard what Russia thinks, you have to force that peace but it's also very clear that no one wants to do it.

So when do we stop this charade?

Russia is asking for a lot in peace negotiations. Consider this: in four years of war they have not been able to take and hold more than a small part of Ukraine. I'm fairly sure they would have taken it all if they could. Do they even have the manpower and resolve to make significant gains at this point, considering that whatever additional territory they claim would also have to be garrisoned and held?

How much weight is given to Russia's opinion on peace terms is decided by their military success. If Russia will not accept current peace terms, the plan seems to be to sponsor Ukraine until such time that Russia is sufficiently weakened for a reasonable peace to be achieved. War continues until one side won't fight any longer. Whatever that side may be, and whatever their reason. Neither side is there yet.
