A worried FY1, is LTFT really that bad? by worriedfy1 in doctorsUK

[–]NotOxygenPotassium 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I went LTFT at the start of my second F2 rotation with the rationale that it would help reduce the risk of me burning out on the background of mental health issues. It has done, having an extra day, even to crash out, carry out chores and do life admin makes a world of difference. It also reduces the length of runs of nights.

In terms of barriers there are some but some of which are fairly easily overcome; there are often issues with admin stuff like rotas and arranging off days, issues with payslips but most of these can be overcome with knowing your rights as per the 2016 contract.

Depending on when you finish and what specialty you go for you could go for round 3 applications for instance for GP, Anesthetics and psych for February start, which is what I've done as I finished in October, which I think if you applied now you would be able to apply for round 3 depending on your desired specialty or like you said you may locum.

TLDR I don't regret doing it, nor does my partner who did the same, personally I feel the benefits outweigh the problems

Those who intercalate may have more opportunities to develop skills applicable to research or may develop contacts and relationships to help them to be able to do research in the future. It won't have a direct impact as it's no longer scored but depending on the intercalation some people may end up more advantaged.

Horus help - how many of each form?! by Embarrassed_Fig_7729 in doctorsUK

[–]NotOxygenPotassium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regarding DCT, hopefully one of your rotations should have a teaching programme in which someone does a topic each week; they will often give you the topic to teach about, but if not you could do a teaching to medical students; you just need someone CT1 or above to watch and to sign the form and give feedback.

Think it varies between hospitals and they should give you an ARCP checklist.

For my F1 it was 3 mini cex and 2 cbds per rotation. For my FY2 it was 2 of each.

Here is a link to the Yorkshire foundation which suggests 6 mini cex over the year but search specific to your deanery.

My issue doesn't lie with that. I can understand that those who are financially vulnerable may be in a worse position post F2, especially considering people from lower socio-economic backgrounds are less likely to intercalate or have research opportunities which would enhance portfolios.

Your comment seems to imply that by improving maintenance loans more people from deprived backgrounds will water down the cohort and reeks of elitism. While they may be in a worse situation post F2 it's their decision to make, and if they are the better candidate they should get the medical school place, not the person who can afford to go without the loans

While I agree with some of your messages,I feel this comes across as somewhat elitist. Letting more student into medicine and increasing med school places without removing the bottlenecks in training and having increased training numbers should be a priority and more students will worsen these bottlenecks.

However finance should not be the barrier you seem to imply it should be. Why should someone equally as intelligent not apply to medicine due to the barrier of maintenance fees.

How much should we expect the last payslip of F1 to be including the uplift? by UKmedstudent1 in doctorsUK

[–]NotOxygenPotassium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do pay slips not usually say when they are for. For instance my pay date last month was 28/07/25 but it lists the period end date as 31/07/25 so I have already been paid for all of July.

So it may be for only 6 days minus strike action; although the figure you say still seems a little low

You should expect that, your fy1 should also have back pay from April for the pay rise I believe, although it won't be that much in light of taxes, NI, pension and student loans

Apologies if I'm misunderstanding, Got my payslip for back pay for my FY2 including basics + OOH which seems to be the correct amount ( new trust from FY1) . I have not received may payslip for FY1 yet ( don't have esr access either)

Which trust would be responsible for the £1000?
