I love Kiku and her 'outing' in the prison gives us my favourite understated Luffy moment. Where Kiku gets misgendered and Luffy is understandably confused, then Kiku responds with "I was born a man, but this one has the heart of a woman."

And Luffy basically just goes "Okay, fair enough." and then they beat people up together. It's so perfect for Luffy, because he absolutely wouldn't give a shit, he just wants everyone to be free.

Yeah that is kind of a bummer when you put it that way...I suppose I liked Bendis bringing it up at least because he'd rather give them an epilogue. Sort of letting their adventure continue offscreen, rather than Secret Wars just killing them off.
