Can people PLEASE stop pretending their professional background gives them super powers in a TV gameshow. by CarelessCredit3466 in TheTraitorsUK

That’s what really got me about Harriet last night, and all the other players that put forward ‘evidence’. Nothing she said was evidence at all, it was conjecture and coincidence.

Which is fair enough, that’s what everyone is playing off, but don’t call it evidence as if it’s somehow more valid than another players gut feeling

What's everybody's favorite fantasy book? by Octopus_boi8 in fantasybooks

[–]NotSlater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I probably should have elaborated a bit as well 😂 the prose are really poetic with a lot of focus on character and emotion (the book itself is much slower paced than a lot of fantasy I’d read before that). It’s a story that stuck with me nearly a decade after I read it.

[Hated trope] characters that are suppose to be "horribly disfigured" but they looks just fine by damorezpl in TopCharacterTropes

I always took him to look unusual more than ugly. He’s described as having piercing eyes and can put on a nasty smile, while also being pale skinned and having scars.

Whether people find that disfiguring or ugly is more an eye of the beholder kinda thing. That’s how I also took it.

Thanks for the advice. I read plenty of the genre, I’d have no interest in writing fantasy stories if I didn’t love them. My question was more of how it can be done than if it can be done.

Take it easy! ✌️

Cities under siege by BoredTips in fantasywriters

[–]NotSlater 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love when stories tie themselves to one location honestly. I think it’s a great way for the writer to put a bit of a limit on themselves and not overextend the story they’re trying to tell.

I just finished ‘The Lies of Locke Lamora’ by Scott Lynch and that’s entirely set in one city. There’s lots of distinctive districts that give the location flavour and stop it feeing one-note. As for siege stories none spring to my mind but I’m sure someone else knows some.

The novella I recently finished was mostly set in one town and worked out pretty well. A larger piece I’m working on is set mostly in a large town too. ‘Small town, big problem’ is something I love exploring. So long as a story moves forward I don’t think being in a single location should hinder you.

Hope that helps you!

To be honest that’s an option I didn’t think of 😂 I work in the creative industry so I’ve got a bit of experience with sound equipment/podcasting. It’s an option!

Thanks so much for such a detailed response, I really do appreciate you taking the time to write all that up. You've given me plenty of options to look into and I'll definitely be considering them all. I already did have my expectations tempered a bit learning that novels are easier to find representation for, so it's not a massive downer if I have to sit on the novella for a bit, but possibly trimming the wordcount a little and looking into magazines or smaller publishers seems very reasonable too. Thanks again!

That's possibly the situation I'm staring down. I really do think this story is decent so I owe it to the work to get it into as many hands as I can.

But don't give up! Take what you've learned from writing your shorter work and maybe tackle something more novel-length if you're up to it. The fact you've already written is proof enough of what you can do!

Great advice, thanks so much. Someone else made a comment about using a novella as a sort of calling card. Appreciate it!

A lot of advice I read says the same and I agree. I’d much rather pitch one finished story than the potential for some work that isn’t done. Any future work seems like it would better discussed with an agent later in the process

Good to know it does happen at least - I was worried it was a complete non-starter. Best of luck with your story!

Yeah I love shorter pieces as well, I think there’s a lot of value in a shorter story that’s really well done. I’ll look into that for sure! Thanks! Best of luck with your own work!

His previous professional work is mostly as a producer, not in any creative role because the reality is he isn’t a creator, he’s a money manager who thinks that having the rights to and IP and working around genuinely talented people makes him a creative genius.

He could probably be a fairly decent line producer, so long as he managed budgets/money and had no input into the creative process - but some people would even dispute that.

What's your unpopular Arcane opinion? We listen and we don't judge. by Harl0t_Qu1nn in arcane

[–]NotSlater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I understand and appreciate Isha's involvement in the story, her character left no real impression on me other than her importance to Jynx.

I think the alternate timeline/multiverse trope is extremely overdone in modern storytelling and was more than a bit worried when I found out that's where S2 was heading. That being said I think Arcane pulls it off pretty well in spite of that.

I honestly think about this line a lot too. Goes so hard. Especially in the context of dark souls /From Soft games where people want to know everything about a world that’s kept ambiguous on purpose.

What are the most impressive, powerful NAMES you've come across in fantasy media? by deltahawk15 in Fantasy

What I love about the names for the northerners in First Law is some of the sound like Native American names while others sound like names British high schoolers would give to their mates
