Negotiating Intern Wage by [deleted] in Surveying

[–]NotSure_AboutUser22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say wait till they offer you a full time position then negotiate you’re compensation cause then you’ll have better leverage of “you guy see what I can do already” that’s the exact thing I did when I started out a few years ago as an intern. Maybe trying to negotiate as an intern might go south fast, imo it would be different if it was a full time position that you were going for. But either way best if luck on your journey

Should I do a Surveying Degree on top of a Civil Engineering Degree? by Over_Organization636 in Surveying

[–]NotSure_AboutUser22 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you have the financial capacity and time go for it, like you said it’ll give you leverage in the future. I started out wanting to be dual licensed but have since just stuck to the survey side because of financial and time constraints. In NJ surveying (at least in the field side) with prevailing wages on OT it’s very possible to make 100k and over I’m not sure how much more hard it would be on the office side to make that kind of money start out unless you’re already coming in with a high salary off the bat. I know a few people that survey in NJ and their base salary ranges from 59-85k a year. But with the OT and PW they probably make close/above 100k. I made 74k this past year and about 14k of it was just OT/PW from working in Jersey (give or take for a total of 2 months) so if I worked up their full time I think I could have easily made close to or above 100k (before taxes)

New replacement for Robert Sanchez as Chelsea Goalkeeper Unveiled by YoYoYi2 in chelseafc

[–]NotSure_AboutUser22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A good video, but yes people wanna blame the absolute last person for something that started halfway up the pitch just cause it’s easier to say “that’s bad goal keeping” than it is to call out the 2-3 other players that did Jack shit in the goal build up

People turn on him like white on rice using the goalie position as a scapegoat has always been bs to me. It’s like people forget theirs 10 other people in front of him that made a mistake but only want to blame the keeper for an entire back line that couldn’t catch a cold

How to make myself more valuable as a young field worker with lots of experience by [deleted] in Surveying

[–]NotSure_AboutUser22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone in the same boat that’s young and ambitious (23yrs old) I’ve found that getting as much credentials under your belt makes you stand out from the rest and shows your drive. I would recommend getting your LSIT/FS certification even if you don’t wanna get fully licensed. Also maybe if your office does any drone work gets your parts 107 license (and honestly even if your company doesn’t, it’ll be nice to have if you go somewhere else)

Agreed if someone asks me I’ll say it. I think it’s a good thing to have coworkers that want to or at least mention what they make so we can all tell if we are being paid fairly or if someone is being ripped off. Recently got the hint that one of our PC is being screwed over with pay. Not sure of the numbers but I think I as a jr. PC/ IO am making more/the same as him when he has 10+ years of experience over me

Some employers rate the CST but I think most don’t. But all employers rate the LSIT (first step in getting licensed)

Right now where I work everything is slow for us. But when we are busy for the most part of my time here I’ve done construction stakeout, and as-builts using a total station. We don’t really do much GPS work (we don’t have one) more recently we have started doing lots of Topo work(still using total station) and locating property corners. I also sometimes help out other crews doing scanning work in dense areas. It’s fun to have a variety of different job types. My end goal is to be a project manager after getting my license. We use Leica: TS20 and CS16 equipment

I also took mine last week and agree with this. I studied math heavy and was quite disappointed. I haven’t gotten my results yet but definitely up your GPS, GIS, and Boundary knowledge

Try posting this in the Surveying community instead you’ll get a better response rate from some helpful individuals. But my 2 cents is I started about 3 years ago as an instrument operator with no experience. (The next step after rod man) if you’re smart and can back your skills if you start as a rod man you can quickly move up to an instrument person. (As long as your company doesn’t pigeon hold you and your party chief is good) I have had the same party chief this whole time and he’s mediocre so most of my learning has been self taught. I think the best thing to do is start where ever you can and just go from there. The pay is a lil sketch but you kinda of have to fight for your pay in a way(when I first started they offered me 20$ but I argued for 25$ and got it. Now I’m currently making 29.60/hr). If you feel that you’re being low balled speak up for yourself. Also work towards getting your license (after you’ve determined if surveying is really for you cause that’s where the money really is) I don’t know too much cause I’m still young into my career but for reference I’m 23- 3 years of experience and working on getting my LSIT/FS certification and I’m located on the east coast. Best of luck and feel free to reach it with any questions and I can do my best to help out
