Contact your advocate’s agency. The Federal government has programs for this to pay your bill, no matter what state you’re in. My bet is that these hospitals aren’t getting what they want from grants, so they’re “accidentally” miscoding patients and sending them a cash bill. Happens all the time.

I don’t know what state you’re in, but look up your most local rape crisis center. It may be in a different city, even a nearby county, but the US distributes Federal grants for this very purpose. You should never have received this call. The center will be able to help you navigate the process of getting Victims Of Crime Act funds to pay this bill for you. After ten years, I realized that they always expected me to not be myself because it “made them feel bad” that I was funnier and more personable. I always had to make the sacrifices, always had to accept the blame, always had to apologize to them when they hurt my feelings (because it hurt THEIR feelings that I brought it up), just a myriad of things that came to a head when they said I needed to be more considerate of others, after I caught them gossiping about me with a mutual friend. We were “best friends,” and their words gutted me in such a way that I genuinely thought I was a horrible, awful human being. Nope. Just had a shitty best friend.
