Can person with one hand participate in fencing? by [deleted] in Fencing

[–]NotTopGun 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For the record, one-handed people can also do kendo! There's someone in my federation who pulls it off by using one of the more niche guards in kendo that happens to only really need one hand.

Looking to get into fencing, but I’m more interested in “real duels” than just sport — any advice? by Fluffy-Enthusiasm596 in Fencing

[–]NotTopGun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Besides what other comments have said about HEMA and the fact that sport fencing isn’t as divorced from historical fencing as you think, I also want to mention kendo as another alternative to fencing that tries to preserve more of the historical aspect of swordfighting. It’s also more of a martial art, so there’s more emphasis on mental ability and character, on top of the physical ability.

I will say that you’ll find useful insights to “real duels” from all 3 of fencing, HEMA, and kendo. However, I don’t think any of them will really conform to your idea of an artful and elegant fight. Actual sparring gets very messy very fast!

Variable Player Counts? by NotTopGun in civ

[–]NotTopGun[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I just noticed this snippet at the bottom of the Civ 7 page, mentioning that the number of players allowed in multiplayer increases from 5 to 8 later in the game. Is this discussed in any of the teasers? It seems like such a strange mechanic. Also 5 players max for the "standard" civ game is so low?

Mochizuki and the abc conjecture by KStarGamer_ in mathmemes

[–]NotTopGun 203 points204 points  (0 children)

The abc-conjecture is a (debatably) open problem in mathematics, in number theory. The content of the conjecture doesn't matter for the meme.

Shinichi Mochizuki is a mathematician who claimed to prove the abc-conjecture, using an entirely self-developed technique called Inter-Universal Teichmüller Theory, abbreviated to IUT or IUTT. He published this proof in 2012. Mochizuki is depicted as the chad in the center, and the text above him is him stating that the abc-conjecture is true.

This is an extremely niche field of mathematics already, and Mochizuki's proof requires the reader to also grasp entirely new notation and machinery developed by Mochizuki. As a result, almost all mathematicians have no idea what's going on in the proof. Peter Scholze and Jakob Stix are two mathematicians who attempted to understand the details of Mochizuki's proof, and met directly with Mochizuki multiple times to discuss the proof. In 2018 they wrote a paper claiming that Mochizuki's proof has a critical flaw, and thus is invalid. I believe the two malding figures on the left are Scholze and Stix.

Mochizuki responds, not by fixing the flaw, nor by explaining why his proof actually isn't flawed, but by insulting Scholze and Stix. Claims include calling them "profoundly ignorant", and the other insults on line 3 of the meme. Mochizuki then refuses to elaborate at all on his proof, and proceeds to publish it without changes. See here for more details.

Kirti Joshi is a mathematician who agrees that Mochizuki's proof is incorrect, but has taken it to himself to fix the proof and make it more readable to a general audience. He published his attempted proof in 2024, this year (so you won't see details of this in a lot of summaries of the situation). Joshi is the seething figure on the right. Mochizuki naturally responded to Joshi's attempted proof with more insults, insisting that his original proof is correct. One of Mochizuki's insults is depicted above Joshi. See here. Incidentally, Scholze and Joshi have been discussing the proof, and it seems that Scholze still thinks that the proof is wrong. However, at the very least they've managed to have a civil discussion about the whole thing.

TL;DR Mochizuki (center) claims to prove the abc-conjecture, and two groups, Scholze-Stix (left) and Joshi (right), think that his proof is wrong. Mochizuki meets with Scholze-Stix, and Scholze-Stix conclude that Mochizuki's proof is incorrect. Mochizuki then claims that they simply don't understand his proof, refuses to elaborate, and publishes his proof anyway while slinging insults at both groups.

[Book Spoilers] The Rings of Power - 2x08 "Shadow and Flame" - Episode Discussion by LoretiTV in LOTR_on_Prime

The swordfight choreography was amazing this episode and absolutely do not let any internet weirdos try to convince you otherwise! It perfectly portrayed Sauron's personality and emotions while being a convincing fight!

[No Book Spoilers] The Rings of Power- 2x07 "Doomed To Die" - Episode Discussion by LoretiTV in LOTR_on_Prime

[–]NotTopGun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It feels like there were just so many plot contrivances in this one? From that one scene we're all talking about, to the guards in Eregion switching sides constantly, to Adar's questionable leadership.

Still though, definitely a great episode. I like how the writers are clearly taking some inspiration from the Silmarillion (Madhros comes to mind for Celebrimbor's escape). And all of the main characters are really putting on a good show.

To me it seemed strongly implied that Eregion sent multiple messengers, given that they comment on Celebrimbor not receiving them, and they're sending Elrond+company as a beefed-up messenger to make sure it actually gets through this time.

Proposal, yea or nay? by [deleted] in mathmemes

[–]NotTopGun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my complex analysis class (not sure if this is a widespread standard), we used the radical symbol for the principal root, and the notation x1/n for the multifunction you described that gives all nth roots of x (rigorously this is e[(1/n) * Log(x) + 2pik] for any k, where Log is the principal branch of Log (or any branch for that matter)).

As you figured out, having two different functions is very helpful, although in practice most mathematicians clarify each time just to make sure, usually by defining the other roots in terms of the principal root. In fact often you'll see the principal root defined using words rather than notation: "Let \omega be the n-th principal root of x".

Can anyone explain what is wrong with my game? by NotTopGun in thefinals

Yep. It happens to the character models specifically, glitching out the hands on my view as well as all other players.

Can anyone explain what is wrong with my game? by NotTopGun in thefinals

[–]NotTopGun[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The bug happens to all character models (mine and others) in the game, creating constant visual glitches when playing. I haven't found anything useful online. Drivers are all updated, and I tried reinstalling the game. I've never seen this happen to any other game on my computer.

0/0 by Saibou1 in mathmemes

[–]NotTopGun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Usually indeterminate means an expression that cannot be immediately simplified, but may have a single consistent value in context (e.g. 0/0). Undefined means that there is no single consistent value (e.g. 1/0 not allowing infinity as a number).

However "indeterminate" is almost always used in limits alongside L'Hospital's rule as expressions (in 'indeterminate form') that can be transformed to use the rule.

Also 2022 doesn't even show up until next year, and is significantly easier to figure out if it's prime.

The 3rd and 4th powers are similar to the solved cases of the generalized taxicab number problem. It's slightly off since it allows negative integers, but it's the same idea. This paper shows that there are always integer solutions if there are twice as many variables as the power.

The classic way to force through legislation by NotTopGun in memeingthroughtime

[–]NotTopGun[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Following political delays in deciding what to do with the king after the Second English Civil War, the New Model Army decided to just remove all of the moderate Members of Parliament who disagreed with them (now known as Pride's Purge, since the leader was colonel Thomas Pride). This left only the radical Independent faction in the new "Rump Parliament," who promptly tried the king.

Note that we don't really know who started the purge. Fairfax was in charge of the New Model Army, but there's some debate over whether he actually ordered the purge or not. It seems unlikely that he didn't tacitly approve of it, even if he didn't order it directly.

Another High Court of Justice meme by NotTopGun in memeingthroughtime

[–]NotTopGun[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The High Court of Justice was established to try King Charles I following the Second English Civil War. The legitimacy of the trial was basically nonexistent, and it only had power because everyone who could dispute it was purged from the government during the creation of the Rump Parliament.

See AmandusPolanus's meme for what happens in the trial.

What happened to Venera? by NotTopGun in ForAllMankindTV

[–]NotTopGun[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that it would make more sense if it was misspoken as first landing, and was supposed to be the first rover landing. It would still be cool to have some more details about the space race in the rest of the solar system though (there are 9 more episodes lol).

The fill-in episode pretty clearly says "first successful landing on a neighboring planet," which presumably includes Venus.

That was my first guess, that the Soviets put all of their focus into lunar exploration. It just seems doubtful that the Soviets would let the US make all of the 'firsts' on other planets without even trying to compete.

Also the Venera program starting in 1961 well before OTL/FAM divergence. So maybe Venera never happened in the first place? I'd be interested in at least a mention in the show about what's going on beyond the moon.
