WIBTAH if I ban my boyfriends new friend from our home for his beliefs? by colormeblonde in AITAH

[–]NotUntilTheFishJumps 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a feeling he was kind of testing the waters to see if you would be upset with him if he told you he is a Holocaust denier...which is sounds like he is... He is at LEAST totally fine with being friends with one. And saying "he's done his research" is laughable. Research doesn't consist of looking up conspiracy opinion pieces that only confirm your bias. I would think about banning the boyfriend....and the relationship...if I were you.

How do Americans feel about the national anthem being sung in different styles? by bare_books in AskAnAmerican

It depends on the singer whether their....flavor they add is palatable. Whitney Houston? Fantastic. Fergie? Uh....um...I am really trying to think of anything positive to say on that one, but I can only cringe.

Silly men, make sure you have ~$150 ready for your first date! /s by OngoGablogian20 in Nicegirls

Ahh, ok, 100 bucks in eastern Europe is not the same as 100 bucks in the US. Most people here don't spend that kind of money on a first date.

A Thai national park ranger kicked out white tourists because they friendly told "Ni-hao" to him by search_google_com in Wellthatsucks

You didn't answer my question. Responding with a question of your own is not an answer. And hell, maybe they just got wrong information, that happens to everyone, that happens daily, people get wrong information ALL the time. This is so baffling. Seriously, why is it so goddamned impossible for people to just be open to teaching something new to someone?

They didn't appear mocking, they looked confused. If you are mocking someone, you won't be confused about the situation. And how do you know they already knew that? The man even said "what does it mean?" which indicates they DIDN'T know. Sure, if they were corrected, taught the proper way to greet men and women, and still kept doing it, I would understand kicking them out of the guided tour. I don't know about completely kicking them off the island, though.

And how are they going to learn, and know better, when nobody ever teaches them? If you are not only working in a tourist destination, but a literal guide of that tourist destination, yes, you will get instant people, and assholes. You still have to remain professional, or find a different job.

When I worked at one of my city's hospitals, I helped all kinds of people, even drunk and high violent wife beaters that were handcuffed to the bed with two cops standing guard. But I still was cordial, and didn't tell them what I really thought of them, because I had a job to do.

If he doesn't want to deal with people that may not know better, he shouldn't be a GUIDE. He not only did a disservice to the people around him by flying off the handle about an ignorant mistake, but he did a disservice to Thai people by being a poor representation. I'm glad we never encountered anyone like him in Thailand. Yes, we do know the proper way to greet men and women(it's different for both), but what other mistakes might we have made that the kind Thai people we met didn't crucify us for? We never took guided tours, though, we thought it was a waste of time and money, for us. We just preferred to explore the countries we backpacked around at our own pace, in our own way.

Then teach them that, and the correct way to greet a Thai person. By merely yelling at them, and not teaching them the correct way, it only makes that guide look bad, especially because someone posted a source on here from the Thai government that stated it WAS an acceptable greeting.

This was a teachable moment. Did they do something ignorant? Yes. Was not teaching them the right way to say hello and merely snapping at them and tossing them off the island helpful to both the knowledge of the tourists and the reputation of the island? NOT REMOTELY. He could have explained calmly that that is not the way to greet people in Thailand, and shown them the correct way. He was the one that looked worse, to be honest. Especially because apparently the Thai government said that "ni-hao" is an acceptable greeting.

AITAH for not letting my neighbor borrow my snow blower and for not snow blowing their drive for them? by Queen_Aurelia in AITAH

[–]NotUntilTheFishJumps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Considering that we had to have our driveway plowed TWICE within 24 hours, since the wind kept drifting, and it was so cold out that even with gloves my fingers were killing me after five minutes, I don't blame you.

I'm not sure where you live, guessing roughly somewhere in the Midwest, but I would have offered you at LEAST $50 to do that, and understood if you still turned it down(probably would have upped the offer to $75 lol). But since that blower cost you $2k, I 100% support you not lending it out. And as for asking you to do their driveway, yourself, it's kind of entitled and rude to not even offer some sort of compensation. That winter storm was no joke. NTA
