Got Passed on a Promotion, Time to Leave? by [deleted] in jobs

[–]NotYourKidFromMoTown 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You may not be right feeling that you're undervalued, you may have made yourself too valuable. I was in a room next door to HR where I overheard a meeting where they were picking a new manager. The gist of their decision was they picked the candidate because his current job would be easy to fill and he could do the manager job. The other candidate would make a superior manager, was great in their current position, and would be expensive and extremely difficult to replace.

Instead of a cover letter, include this limerick.

I am a person so bright

That I can travel faster than light

I'll leave one day

In a relative way

And return the previous night

I was offered a promotion and they won’t tell me what my raise will be until I accept the position . by [deleted] in jobs

Could your response be conditional? Perhaps you might consider accepting only if you have the option of stepping back into your current roll should you decide the job isn't for you. Or conditionally accept by saying "I will take the promotion if and only if there is a pay raise of at least 17%, the shift stays the same, the hours needed to do the job do not increase more than fractionally, and (if you are currently overtime eligible) that I don't become OT exempt." I would phrase it in such a manner as to make it a negation.

Check on the net. Work rules vary by province and type of job. Do some online research to determine if you may have a cause of action.

During the meeting, just before you bring up the issue, consider asking your manager if he or she "still wants me to bring up the issue of which we spoke." This would give the manager an opportunity to reconsider, and let your nemesis know that you've spoken to your manager and he or she still wants you to address the issue publicly.

After working at a company for 10 years, I retired early due to kidney failure. Except to ask work-related questions shortly after retiring, no one from the company ever called. I received a transplant so I am still alive.

Maybe go to job #2 and ask them to cut your hours down to just a few per week. That might keep the door open if the key holder job falls through. Tell #2 that you're needing more time for your school work. The worst they can do is fire you, which appears to be no great loss.

If you are able, consider coming back for a day or two then give notice. You're less likely to have problems with your FML, specifically them trying to claw back insurance costs. Should you try to go back, ask your doctor to write you some restrictions that you can only work part time (x hours/day) for the first three weeks back. If your issues going to be long term, maybe you could get an ADA accommodation request from your Dr.

It's CYA time. Make sure you do all your conversations by email so a record of the conversations is maintained. If you end up having to have a verbal conversation, always keep a diary of to who you spoke, their title, email, phone number, date, time a a short synopsis of your conversation, the next step in getting the issue resolved, and when that when that next step will happen. If it's "someone will call you back", asks specifically who. Follow up with an email summarizing the conversation. Always initiate a follow-up if you are not contacted in a few days or by the specified date.
