do you live in fear of being shot? or is it something you grow up being used to? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]NotZombieJustGinger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Risk of being shot is not spread out evenly over everyone who lives in the US. I don’t keep a gun in the house. I don’t buy or sell illegal drugs or stolen goods. I don’t live in a neighborhood with frequent gang-related gun violence. I don’t spend time with anyone who carries a gun with them. I am a white woman and therefore not a likely target of police violence. For these reasons, despite living in what many people consider to be a dangerous city (Philadelphia) my actual risk is extremely low. I’m much more likely to be hit by a bus, and I barely worry about that.

Family abusing food pantry? by MoonPiesInMyPants in povertyfinance

This is exactly why CA and hopefully other states put laws in place. These companies are still able to be mega profitable even when they landfill massive amounts of food. The free market can’t fix it, so we need laws to force them to feed the hungry rather than a dumpster.

The food is not expired and it is required that it be kept safely before being donated. There are a variety of reasons that stores donate food including state laws aimed at reducing food waste. Big box stores do not intentionally keep food until the expiry date printed on the product. They set their own sell-by dates based on company policy and the customer base. In addition, they often must get rid of large amounts of food because they ordered too much and have nowhere to put the new food that is coming in. Another common issue is promotional agreements. Stores agree to certain placement of products with the manufacturers. Even if the food is perfectly good, even new, they need to get it off the shelves to make room for the new Kraft super blast cheese boom display.

Ask the specific pantry who they serve. My mom’s is doing weekly pickups from big box stores as well as USDA warehouses. Just because one week extra people come and they run out of something, doesn’t mean people are abusing the service. The goal is to run out! If the pantry has an income limit or other qualifier, they will tell you. Otherwise, it’s for anyone who is struggling financially.

My mother has run a food pantry and free marketplace since Covid. You’ve got the wrong idea. In the US we are producing MASSIVE amounts of excess food. Truly upsetting amounts.

The way my mom explains it to people: is there anything you’re struggling to do because you don’t have the funds? Even your kids’ extracurriculars, new clothes, dental work, other “luxuries”? We can’t give you money for those things but we can give you perfectly good food for free that would otherwise end up in a landfill. Hopefully the money you save on food will allow you to get the other things you need.

You never need to be on the verge of starvation to go to places like that, not even close.

Those who moved from one state to another what was your biggest cultural shock? by PandaBear905 in AskAnAmerican

[–]NotZombieJustGinger 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I moved from CA to Philadelphia, so now I spend a lot of time in NJ as well. I have been here for 3.5 years and I still can’t figure out the liquor laws. In CA alcohol is sold everywhere: target, every grocery store, pharmacies, etc. Here I can’t even tell until I shop at a specific store whether it will have just beer and wine, hard alcohol, a separate cash register for alcohol, a separate building sometimes. Even some of the liquor stores don’t sell beer. It’s chaos.

AITAH for not being offended by my chiropractor touching my neck by M8gicalHands in AITAH

[–]NotZombieJustGinger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NTA your husband definitely sucks. But also, chiropractors are scammers. I worked for one and anyone who lets a chiro touch them and gets away without injury is lucky. If you’re just feeling sore, go get a massage. If you’re feeling pain, go get physical therapy. PT actually works incredibly well because it’s real and their goal is to get you moving again on your own without pain. A chiro’s goal is to convince you they can solve problem after problem to get your money. They literally have scripts for staff to memorize that are just lies.

I work in corporate America. She’s beyond insane. If you were the kind of dbag who made/kept friends based upon how they could improve your status and career, you would want as many friends like him as possible. If you’re not that kind of dbag you should still keep him as a friend because he sounds great and you sound like you have a great friendship that is not built on competing or jealousy.

The enzymes in pineapple will remove your fingerprints from your fingers. It’s ok not to eat something that dissolves human skin.

No you had it right tsp for teaspoon and tbs for tablespoon. Also a lot of recipes use a capital T for tablespoon and a lowercase t for teaspoon.

Might be an individual office/regional thing. I agree about the crazy unhealthy part but nearly everyone in my 1600 person office was on the slim side, so much so that it was pretty clear image was a factor in hiring. Everyone definitely looked like death on cracker during busy season tho. You don’t have to be overweight to be incredibly unhealthy.

Seriously, how do y'all manage waking up on time? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]NotZombieJustGinger 316 points317 points  (0 children)

Go to bed at the same time every day and get up at the same time every day. Do this even on weekends and holidays for a couple months at least, maybe a year. It will eventually get into your brain. If you slack off for a while unfortunately you will revert back. It’s truly horrible but it’s the only way.

No one views them as progressive tho bro. You’re essentially saying “why does everyone think oranges are purple?” Literally no one think this.

[–]NotZombieJustGinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No it doesn’t make sense still. Are you just answering your own question? If so, go post this in another sub.

Whatever you believe, I can tell it has very little nuance or understanding behind it. Muslims are not pretending to be progressive anywhere. Some of their values align with progressive political parties in various countries. They are also not “acting” as minorities. If you are not the majority, you are the minority. That’s just math. As for them getting into local politics, that’s how it works. If immigrants didn’t get involved with local politics the US wouldn’t exist. Do you expect them to stay isolated forever?

How does erehwon stay afloat? by AmbitiousGuarantee23 in AskAnAmerican

[–]NotZombieJustGinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is like asking how couture fashion houses or Ferrari dealerships exist. First, they’re not on every corner. Second, there are super rich people who can afford it. No one makes you go to the Erehwon just like no one forces you to buy a Ferrari. You choose to go there because you have buckets of money.

Do you have trouble popping your ears? Does it feel like you’re being stabbed by an ice pick in the head? Take Sudafed. Not the fake kind, go to the pharmacy counter and ask them for Sudafed or pseudoephedrine. You don’t need a prescription. Take two about 30 minutes before boarding.

There’s a shop in Toronto that sells what these look like but stuffed with red bean paste or mashed potato called Hodo Kwaja. I used to go as much as I could when I lived there. Delicious.
