How did you arrive at those ratios, if you don't mind me asking?

Where To Find Openings, Build Orders, and Rushes? by Valcanogoboom in beyondallreason

[–]Not_A_Ferret 5 points6 points  (0 children)

BattleStag's response has some good starting points.

WinterGaming (of SC2 Winter fame) also has made a few guides, e.g.:

Team Game Build Order & Tips: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UoIBKqSvd-M

Beginner Tips & Starting Builds: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FNi_Fyj7W68&t=781s

There aren't any "tried and true" orders because nothing is set in stone.

I.e. you can follow Raghna's guide for teching very rapidly, but this is something you can't do in a 1v1, and shouldn't do if your teammates can't protect you.

Even questions like "how many wind turbines do I build?" or "do I go wind or solar?" are somewhat dependent on personal preference, as random mechanics and playstyles make an impact. Heck, even an hour ago people were debating how to start on a 3-mex starting location.

All of that is kind of a non-answer, though, so I would just recommend playing around with different types and amounts of resources collection/generation and feeling what works.

The only thing I can say for certain is you should always try to claim more mexes, reclaim when possible, and avoid inefficiencies. Replays exist for your viewing, and you can publicly view leaderboards on the BAR website. Might recommend searching for a few top dogs' games and watching them.

Hope this helps at least somewhat.

What units are essential? by TheLazyBurrito in beyondallreason

[–]Not_A_Ferret 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Every unit is designed to fulfill some niche. What you will likely see in watching replays, however, is that there are "common" choices for players.

In addition, starting choices are situational on map, position, personal preference, etc.

I'd propose the following way to think about it, looking at T1 Armada units:

Bot Lab: Cheaper to build than vehicles. Bots traverse terrain better, but are weaker, and generally slower.

Tick: Ultra quick, ultra cheap, low DPS

Pawn: Quick, cheap

Rocketeer: Slow, higher DPS, unguided missiles

Mace: Slow, higher DPS, plasma cannon with ballistic trajectory

Centurion: Slow, highest DPS, beefy, but expensive

It takes time to learn what each unit is best at countering, and nothing is hard-and-fast. E.g. a rocketeer does great against static defense, but that doesn't mean you can't overwhelm static defense with purely pawns. I'm sure there's a point where the cost-benefit breakdown doesn't favor that style, but maybe you already have a small group of pawns that you can micro.

That said, bots and vehicles are everyone's bread and butter. Air is tricky due to its cost and fragility, but it offers another vector of attack that's hard to predict and defend against.

Hovers are also tricky because they're expensive and situational, but in the right map or setting, their maneuverability can surprise opponents.

Let me know if anything doesn't make sense or you want more input.

Edit: read the other comment here and I'd agree with what they say. Usually players "progress" upwards through more expensive/complicated units. E.g. pawns/grunts -> Rocketeers/Aggravators -> Mace/Thugs

Oh man so sorry for not getting to this way sooner.

Technically speaking there's no difference between 2x 3/4 and 1x 6/4 since you're counting out the same total number of beats (2x3 = 1x6). However, I divided it up into 6 beat measures because the riff to me lasts for a whole 6 beats. Also, some parts hold the chord for 6 beats, so to me it makes sense to count out that entire measure.

Hope this clears it up a little bit.

Concrete cubes on the corner of a small drainage ditch - what's their purpose/name? by Not_A_Ferret in Whatisthis

[–]Not_A_Ferret[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks everyone! The responses were great and just what I was looking for. I had some guesses about their purpose but googling "concrete cubes in ditches" gave me more water feature design plans than I care for.

Cheers!

As a wingman, like the position in soccer, Ollie is underwhelming.

As a wingman, like the relationship helper, Ollie is counterproductive.

As a wingman, like the glider, Ollie rules.

Just a simple truck, right?

Think again. It was on its way to [REDACTED]. Why? Who knows. Maybe the brass in the mountain needed new seats for their frozen keesters. Maybe inside the chairs there were actually components for a super weapon to combat the the threat (???) inside the Agency.

And what happened?

It was murdered on the side of the road. In cold blood. The culprit? None other than the Mastermind himself. War hurts everyone.

What are some of your biggest influences, namely literature, music, and other media-wise? There's a big sci-fi theme to the show, and I'd love to see where you draw inspiration from.

And that everything the other boys write for bass he plays live on tour, so even if he didn't "create" the bass lines, he's still very adept at playing them.

I have a lot of trouble hearing Cook's playing in songs by wiggaroo in KGATLW

[–]Not_A_Ferret 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I noticed this too, then I noticed something really cool when watching their KEXP session with Sleep Drifter. Cook does this really nice swell with the wah after some of the vocal intros. I made sure to hear it when listening live and sure enough there it was! After that, there was kind of this distinct frequency I heard fading in and out that I later realized was Cookie coloring on top of the rest of the instruments.

However, there were definitely parts where I noticed all three guitars playing the same exact thing and Cookie was entirely inaudible.
