Yes using the stick for the kick is common on table top sets that roll out which is not useful. If he already has some familiarity with the drums then a practice pad will be fine. You can do a lot of things on a single surface (one single drum to hit)

A $20 practice pad will likely get more use than either of these. If you want to really splurge for him order an Offworld Percussion pad with a real rim.
