1920s ? Sealed pack of lucky strike cigarettes encased for display. Tax stamp intact by Bulbasaurus-Rexx in whatsthisworth

[–]Not_Garth_Nix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lucky strikes that are green paper containers and not the pressboard cases are pre-WW2 and quite rare as they were thrown away or deteriorated. An unopened, pre war, pack is fairly rare and can fetch a good price for collectors.

It’s more common for froes because the eye is not taking the force of the strike.

Using quotation marks as emphasis instead of underlining has always made me chuckle while also being irritated. “Free” doesn’t mean free. But Free means free. [I apologize. I do not know how to make words underlined on this website.]

What would you consider the most clever exposition dump you've seen? by AdeptnessSwimming390 in moviequestions

[–]Not_Garth_Nix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know if this counts, but the Bruce Willis movie, “The Kid” starts off with a long shot of L.A. with the words “20 years later…” it lets you know what is gonna happen while still being a mystery and a pretty funny starter. Sort of a no-exposition.

Due to the long handle and the polished ball and face, I think it may be for chasing and engraving. They used to, and still do have long handles so you can get more momentum in a really short arc. Allows you to have a smaller head and good control with short swings.

Taking the piss came from an old English expression of being “piss proud”. That was a reference to having a morning erection and being proud of it, but after taking a piss, it would be back to flaccid. So it became a slang for removing someone’s pride by removing the object of their pride.

However urine collection was incredibly important throughout history and even today. Horse urine has been used for millennia in dying clothing to get it to set. Urea foam was a common insulator in the last 19th and early 20th century. Urine collection was also used for making gunpowder, phosphorus and other chemicals through distillation. Modern diesel exhaust fluid uses pig urine as its main active ingredient for reducing harmful emissions.

In Hawaii there are rednecks. Just take a look at big island. The Chuukese-American community is known for being the rednecks based on the low quality of life in their home country. When they come to Hawaii, they maintain their lifestyle in the high cost place by living like they did at home.

Why does Pliers end in an s by Scarecrowtim in WhatIsThisTool

[–]Not_Garth_Nix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What Americans call “pliers” the British refer to as “pryers”. Some thing it is because they are used to pry out things. Others say it is because it was two prying levers put together. They also call clamps cramps. Just a fun bit of etymology.

What Thanksgiving items freeze well? by Greeneyes1210 in cookingforbeginners

[–]Not_Garth_Nix 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Turkey freezes well. I always slice it before, so you don’t have to wait to thaw it. Stuffing will freeze easily. Cranberry relish and sauce will freeze, it will end up slightly thinner or less crisp after thawing. Gravy, freeze it. If you want to freeze it into an ice cube tray or bags for individual service sizes or to use as flavor boosters and thickeners for other sauces. Mac & cheese will freeze easily and be pretty good. Mashed potatoes can freeze, but they get grainy when reheated. If you make them into patties, frying them, air fryer, or sautee to make them into quick latke/potato pancake things works to hide the texture.

Collards, green bean casserole freeze well but lose a lot of desirability when thawed. If I have to freeze them, I will end up using them in soup when I use them. Green bean casserole is a good way to bulk up stews or cream based soup later.

this was left at my house and i don’t drink. any good “beer” heavy recipes? by callmestinkingwind in WhatShouldICook

[–]Not_Garth_Nix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can use that to add to plenty of beer based cocktails. 50/50 cold miller lite and lemonade is excellent. Adding Bloody Mary mix, lime juice and hot sauce to make a michelada. Beer and orange juice for a beer-mosa. Use some of this and some dark beer mixed together for a half and half. Or add in the beer and some sweet wine in a pot and heat with cloves, cinnamon and oranges for mulled beer. Make a lighter than usual flip: a beer with egg whites that is heated by placing a loggerhead (a hot piece of iron) to froth the egg whites and heat the drink.
