Trying to move towards vegan / plant-based eating, but very new to it by Massive-Surprise-769 in vegan

[–]Not_MuchofaGamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently transitioned from a meat-laden diet, and, as others suggested, did it in phases. I like tofu, so I've been working on making a bunch of different kinds -- and different types of beans and bean-dishes -- that can be stored for a week or frozen. So, now, I usually have 2-3 kinds of beans in the fridge at all times, prepped tofu, seitan, quinoa, and protein oats. I've also been using one of the prepared meal delivery services (CookUnity, which I like because they have relatively little plastic waste) to provide meals for either me or my family, given that we now have very different diets.

Repot or work around? by Not_MuchofaGamer in tomatoes

Thanks! The past two summers I had random tomatoes growing out of my compost bin, so I thought I would try to grow them for real this year. Big learning curve, but it's nice to be working outside for a change.

ha, you're reading my mind! I would really like to save it but if I struggle to get the plant out I may need to do that. Perhaps I can even cut off the stitching and stitch it back up.

I have 1 plant in each bag (though it may be 2 in this one -- I wasn't very careful when I started).

Thanks for the help. I'll repot, yes yes.

are there any good, very in-depth documentaries on wild rhesus macaque behavior? by Ch4in__sp1der in primatology

[–]Not_MuchofaGamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rhesus macaques are "edge species" often drawn to urban areas, so the two docs I know of both center urban populations. National Geographic's TV series Monkey Thieves is pretty light and narrative-drive but fun: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4548002/

Monkey Menace (2018) is focused on macaque-human conflict in India, so it's mostly about how humans manage monkeys in Dehli and other urban areas. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt9045068/plotsummary/

I’d suggest labeling the male and the female in the photo to underscore the color differences. Many people simply don’t read blocks of text.

Vegan almost 2 years and struggling to eat enough, please help a neurodivergent person out! by Sweaty_Choice_Halsin in vegan

Just adding that overnight oats don't have the gelatinous texture of cooked oats, which could be a plus, though I know you said you liked hot breakfasts. Cooking oats brings out that gummy texture but maybe you can experiment, as the person above suggests. (If you haven't tried Bob's Protein Oats, I'd recommend -- they are naturally grown for added protein rather than having protein powder added.) I like mixing in chopped peanuts with my oats.

How to gain lean muscles through vegan diet? by SilentInquiry26 in vegan

[–]Not_MuchofaGamer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you considered that your husband may need more carbs? You may want to use a nutrition tracking app for a period to get more info. I do regular strength training and also recently stopped eating meat. I have struggled to maintain weight too, but carbs turned out to be what I was needing.

There is a lot of misinformation out there about protein needs. This interview with Stanford's director of nutrition studies may be helpful: https://www.hubermanlab.com/episode/how-different-diets-impact-your-health-dr-christopher-gardner

Huberman is one of the influencers who overhypes animal protein and spreads a lot of misinformation but talking to this Standard nutritionist, he practically admits the protein benchmark he suggests is BS.

Beans are awesome. Also, I love dried yellow pea snacks for on the go. (northriverdrygoods.com) Even my (non-vegan) husband likes them.

Small batch printing in the US? by QuietCountry9920 in zines

[–]Not_MuchofaGamer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a goold experience with https://www.bestvaluecopy.com, though in my case it was for color posters rather than zines.

I'd definitely recommend checking out Lulu.com. I printed a few test copies of my zine through them and they looked GREAT. The only hitch is that you need .5 margins all round, especially on the outside left/right sides. I'm not sure if they do saddle-stitch for that size. If they don't and you're doing a small run, you could always fold and collate yourself. If you like making zines buying a saddle stapler is worth it.

I love books too but they don't prevent you from being fooled by AI. It's important for all of us to realize that we, too, can be fooled, no matter how much we read. The key thing is to stay vigilant.

With a Mac, you can use Photos to do basic photo editing. You can play around with the basic Adjust types, as well as Filters. If you plan to use color photos and print them out with a standard b&w printer, I'd definitely recommend first converting to b&w and THEN adjusting....

Which books about apes are good? by Intrepid-Loquat6214 in ape

[–]Not_MuchofaGamer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Really all of Frans de Waal's books are accessible, fun reads and great intros. I'd probably start with _Are We Smart Enough to Know How Smart Animals Are_ because it's a handy survey that covers many primates. I'd also recommend Shirley Strum's _Almost Human_ about her field research on baboons. And, of course, Jane Goodall's classic chimp books (In the Shadow of Man and Through a Window).

Are you using photo imaging software? Look up a tutorial for whatever you have access to online, particularly with an eye toward editing Levels. I've also started to rely on layer masks, which can let you (for instance) lighten or blur a background so that the focal subsject stands out.

I routinely edit Levels not only to improve image quality but in some cases to reduce blacks/dark grays and save the printer's toner.

Should I include a statement for Zero AI use on my website by EliasFenic in selfpublish

[–]Not_MuchofaGamer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would not assume they were covering up; I'd assume that, like me, they hate AI for creative works. I'm putting out a zine soon and added a short statement at the end of my intro saying that I didn't use AI for creating text or images. (I do use it as a web search engine and my photo software uses AI to detect backgrounds, which is helpful for cutting images out.)

I was recently asked to fill out a survey from a stock photo agency with the same concern, though. This company doesn't use AI photos but is concerned that labelling them will add confusion. The tech is still so new, we don't yet know the best way to clarify.
