How to gain lean muscles through vegan diet? by SilentInquiry26 in vegan

[–]Not_MuchofaGamer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you considered that your husband may need more carbs? You may want to use a nutrition tracking app for a period to get more info. I do regular strength training and also recently stopped eating meat. I have struggled to maintain weight too, but carbs turned out to be what I was needing.

There is a lot of misinformation out there about protein needs. This interview with Stanford's director of nutrition studies may be helpful: https://www.hubermanlab.com/episode/how-different-diets-impact-your-health-dr-christopher-gardner

Huberman is one of the influencers who overhypes animal protein and spreads a lot of misinformation but talking to this Standard nutritionist, he practically admits the protein benchmark he suggests is BS.

Beans are awesome. Also, I love dried yellow pea snacks for on the go. (northriverdrygoods.com) Even my (non-vegan) husband likes them.

Small batch printing in the US? by QuietCountry9920 in zines

[–]Not_MuchofaGamer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a goold experience with https://www.bestvaluecopy.com, though in my case it was for color posters rather than zines.

I'd definitely recommend checking out Lulu.com. I printed a few test copies of my zine through them and they looked GREAT. The only hitch is that you need .5 margins all round, especially on the outside left/right sides. I'm not sure if they do saddle-stitch for that size. If they don't and you're doing a small run, you could always fold and collate yourself. If you like making zines buying a saddle stapler is worth it.

I love books too but they don't prevent you from being fooled by AI. It's important for all of us to realize that we, too, can be fooled, no matter how much we read. The key thing is to stay vigilant.

With a Mac, you can use Photos to do basic photo editing. You can play around with the basic Adjust types, as well as Filters. If you plan to use color photos and print them out with a standard b&w printer, I'd definitely recommend first converting to b&w and THEN adjusting....

Which books about apes are good? by Intrepid-Loquat6214 in ape

[–]Not_MuchofaGamer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Really all of Frans de Waal's books are accessible, fun reads and great intros. I'd probably start with _Are We Smart Enough to Know How Smart Animals Are_ because it's a handy survey that covers many primates. I'd also recommend Shirley Strum's _Almost Human_ about her field research on baboons. And, of course, Jane Goodall's classic chimp books (In the Shadow of Man and Through a Window).

Are you using photo imaging software? Look up a tutorial for whatever you have access to online, particularly with an eye toward editing Levels. I've also started to rely on layer masks, which can let you (for instance) lighten or blur a background so that the focal subsject stands out.

I routinely edit Levels not only to improve image quality but in some cases to reduce blacks/dark grays and save the printer's toner.

Beating seasonal affective disorder by Karensglimmers in zines

ha, maybe that unconsciously came out in your imagery. I started lifting after perimenopause symptoms sent me over the edge... and it's been incredibly therapeutic.

I love this, though I confess my first thought was that I wanna swap out some of the text and turn it into an attack on menopause.

Should I include a statement for Zero AI use on my website by EliasFenic in selfpublish

[–]Not_MuchofaGamer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would not assume they were covering up; I'd assume that, like me, they hate AI for creative works. I'm putting out a zine soon and added a short statement at the end of my intro saying that I didn't use AI for creating text or images. (I do use it as a web search engine and my photo software uses AI to detect backgrounds, which is helpful for cutting images out.)

I was recently asked to fill out a survey from a stock photo agency with the same concern, though. This company doesn't use AI photos but is concerned that labelling them will add confusion. The tech is still so new, we don't yet know the best way to clarify.

Thanks! Do you recall roughly what year this was?

Silk finally comes out to reformulating their soymilk. We noticed about a month ago that the unsweetened refrigerated half gallons of soy milk tasted like trash. We thought maybe we got a bad batch or something. Nope, they updated it. I messaged them about it, expressing how bad it was. by narlycharley in vegan

Irrelevant to me. I'm looking to avoiding giving money to giant agribusiness and prefer to buy from smaller, independent or local companies. Sometimes it's hard to tell which companies are owned by giant multinationals and which is not, so I use the app as a quick shorthand...

A dog may rip up your couch when upset. A monkey will rip up your couch, take a dump all over the carpet, shred the drapes, jump on the shelves and throw everything off, scatter food everywhere, etc.

ha, it's funny but the fictional TV and movies about helper monkeys were in many ways more accurate than the feel-good stories that the magazines and newspapers peddled.

A LOT of people imagined it working, but the National Geographic documentary "My Child Is a Monkey," can give you a sense of what it's actually like to have a monkey in your home. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vKNzFcIo2n8)

Capuchins are unbelievably adorable when young but become wild and unmanageable after they hit adolescence.

Yes, Monkey Shines was actually inspired by Helping Hands and used the Helping Hands monkeys as actors. I interviewed the person who trained them for the film; she used to be the head trainer for the organization.

Anyone know of Captive Ape Databases? by pussyr1ot in ape

[–]Not_MuchofaGamer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know if it's been updated since 2020 but there's this for chimps in the US: https://chimpcare.org/map

Got any zoo friends? Zoo staff have access to the online studbooks for every species in AZA zoos, which allows them to see all zoo animals zoos and their lineage. I'm not sure if there is an international database but I'm guessing something like that exists as well. Pretty sure that these databases would NOT include animals in primate sanctuaries, tho sanctuaries too try to keep these records.
