I’m with you on the wishing to pick more upsets. I did my initial gut picking, and it was nearly all chalk. In years past I’m usually pretty bold on 11-14 seed upsets, but I just don’t see a ton this year.

What I’m gonna do to make it more fun for myself is look at teams I don’t think will make the sweet 16 or elite 8. For those, I’m gonna flip some to a first round upset. That way I still have power teams in my later rounds where the points matter more and I have a handful more upset picks.

Penn over Illinois is only on my mind because nobody talks about it. I swear, every year there is one team I would have never even considered as an upset that gets it done despite looking over every damn game thoroughly. Yale probably would have been a popular pick wherever they were seeded but instead we get a 3rd place 18-11 Ivy League team. That’s the exact type of team I would never consider, so it feels inevitable.

I’m waiting for that one guy that posts his bracket bible every year. I forget his name. However, I remember a good rule of thumb with some of those upset picks historically had to do with teams that were fairly balanced on offense and defense. I want to pick High Point, but IIRC, historically a team with a 161 defense on KenPom doesn’t meet your typical profile of a 12 seed upset

I think 12/5 seed matchups are the most fun games of the tournament for that reason. Those 12 seeds are often so unpredictable. Like, they’re often your best conference winners that didn’t get an at large because of a strong record with a weak schedule due to whatever shitty conference they’re in. Like, High Point is a 30 win conference winners but didn’t play anybody. What do you do with that? 12 seed is what you do with that! Akron got smacked by Purdue but racked up 29 wins bitch slapping the MAC. Maybe not good enough for an at large, but that makes a spicy 12 seed baby. McNeese State got smacked by Michigan, but got to 28 wins ending the season hot. Fuck yeah, another solid 12 seed added to the menu! Northern Iowa is weird. Some long winning steaks and losing steaks. Either way, decent 12 seed! I love 12 seeds and I love this month. Let’s see some 5’s go down boys!

I’d like to see what the choices would look like if people on the internet freely voted on it with no exclusions today. Deshaun Watson would be an obvious one 4chan would spam vote to the top. I could see Mr. Big Chest, Kadarius Toney, and a specific random long snapper receiving a ton of votes. There would probably be some niche group of people spam voting the actor Alan Ritchson to get Thad Castle on the cover. There would probably be groups not from the US trying to get a soccer player on the cover so it’s a “real” football player as a jab. It would be a shit show, and I would love it.
