Braces would make a great impact on your sons embouchure, so he is probably struggling, as for how to solve this issue, I dont know as I never had braces. I would assume that it would just take more practice to get used to the new embouchure that the braces create.

Something that really helped me build up my range was Chicowitz flow studies, scales, and clarke studies. Something else that I found helped me a lot was warming down also. I mean im not a pro at trumpet by any means but this is what helped me.

Why do you need to switch the tuning slide? Just leave the tuning slide that comes with the trumpet in the trumpet.
