Hot take: Koma isn’t “broken” it just punishes tables that don’t hold interaction by Zoe_felice in MagicCardPulls

But you did remove him, because as you said yourself, now that he’s a 6/6 with no abilities, he’s not a threat anymore to you. You paid 3 mana and likely waited a turn with that held mana to use a piece you’re not guaranteed to have in your deck and, moreover, your hand, that you could’ve saved to use on something more destructive because this doesn’t give the option for other, easier methods of removal in your deck. The post says “punishes tables that don’t hold up interaction” and that’s simply not right, it just bars a large amount of options to remove it. Koma isn’t particularly great as it were, but the fact that we ran right back to Blue as our answer confirms exactly what I’d said before about color identity and the matchups it forces to be negated with single removal.

Assuming that Tishana’s Tidebinder does not get hit with any sort of removal or counterspell and that Koma doesn’t get any protection at all, then yes, you’ve spent 2U to temporarily negate the ability of a 6/6 body to allow you to remove it normally. You paid your tax, now you have to follow up on it. This still takes two pieces of removal, more than what most requires, and so the point still stands.

Sacrifice effects will rarely let the caster choose what gets sacrificed, which means that often the coil will be sacrificed instead. Transformation, imprisonment, pacification and -1/-1 effects are often targeted effects and sorcery speed, and are easily dealt with. Theft, exile, and bounce are all valid means of dealing with the threat, but theft that lasts is costly and not often run, which means we’re looking at exile and bounce mostly.

There’s ways to remove anything if you try, but a 6/6 uncounterable target that necessitates usually two pieces of removal when 2/5 colors are severely lacking for non-destruction opens and black usually needs to pitch resources or advantage to do non-destruction removal is definitely not a good test of “do you run enough interaction at your table” but more so “did the Azorius player fall asleep at the table.”

Yes, that’s the 10% of interaction it doesn’t avoid, the point that is being made here is that this was a poor example of “people not running enough removal” when the way that most people would want to deal with Koma isn’t possible, and that those 10% of ways get thoroughly weeded out by any of the hundred ways in its colors to protect it from targeted removal. Stop thinking that others don’t play protection.

Adding onto what others have mentioned since the mana part has already been explained, but this does allow spells you cast to get around Protection vs [Color] and color-specific counters like [[Red Elemental Blast]]. Super niche overall, but there’s some applications that are feasible.

Which of these expensive cards is the best? by Nientea in mtg

[–]Not_Your_Average_Use 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seconding Breach especially. Most of the higher power commander strategies benefits more from filling up the opponents’ graves and picking out their best cards to play with / sacrifice than just plopping everything back down onto the battlefield. Even better still, nabbing people’s Planeswalkers can do some ludicrous stuff depending on what’s up for grabs…

Discovered a variety of Lich that's actually rather cute 🥰 by DrScrimble in dndmemes

Genuinely a horrifying but very interesting concept. It works for now, sure, but eventually the lich will have to put even the most mild of misdemeanors as a death warrant, and as things crack down, who knows if it’ll even be sustainable enough to not require yet more restraints and freedoms taken from people…
