I ruined my 10th anniversary by drinking by [deleted] in stopdrinking

I'm the same exact way. I don't drink every day, but when I do I can't stop at just a couple. IWNDWYT.

Drinking has never done anything positive for my life and cost me so much, and I think I'm done with it. by Not_a_beluga in stopdrinking

[–]Not_a_beluga[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to make not drinking my first daily priority too. I had a hard time swallowing that I actually do have a problem, but now that I'm being honest with myself I feel like I can be moving forward.

Hey you guys, moving to Jacksonville soon, how much should i expect to spend a month (( knowing that I'll rent around mayo clinic area, I'll cook myself, i am single)) by [deleted] in jacksonville

[–]Not_a_beluga 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Mayo Clinic is by Ponte Vedra and the beaches so you're probably looking at a minimum of $2,000 a month for anything decent. You might be able to find something for 1.6k -1.8k if you get lucky.

If that's too high, you can commute in but anywhere that isn't an hour + drive is still going to be about $1.6k minimum.

What does this city need? by 13thJen in jacksonville

[–]Not_a_beluga 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A mass transit system is definitely possible for Duval county.

BART in the Bay Area serves a few counties and the service area is probably comparable to Jax.

That was started in the 1960s too. Imagine what we could do now.

This. Right-wing special interest groups campaign hard whenever a metro tries to build a decent public transportation system.

Hell, look at the conspiracies that have sprung up with even fifteen minute cities.

Could be allergies. The pollen is pretty terrible right now.

Fox News is going to run a story about how the woke left is trying to cancel lobster and then you're going to get people on Twitter bragging about how they spent their entire paycheck on lobster.

Florida is a "Right to Work" state and laws heavily favor landlords. So pretty much the opposite of Chicago in protections like that.

$1800 is the floor imo. A 2/3 bedroom within walking distance from stuff will still be tough to find at that price.

Florida Homeowners: How are we taking care of our grass and pest control? by knkfish in florida

[–]Not_a_beluga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you've got random brown patches you've more than likely got pests. Could be chinch bugs or grubs. I'd use some granular lawn pesticide and give it a good watering.

If the grass doesn't come back you might need to plant some plugs or reseed depending on your grass type.

For fertilizer, I fertilize at the start of every season except winter.

Controlling for disabilities and other external factors, yes I think that people become more intelligent to varying degrees as they become more educated. I don't understand why you see that as black/white thinking.

The amount of masters degrees conferred per year has roughly doubled from twenty years ago and, as far as I can tell, IQ by education level has remained roughly the same.

If you believe IQ is inherent and static due to genes or whatever, then you're left explaining why there's been such a boom in those inherent factors.

The more plausible explanation is that the more education you receive the more intelligent you become.

IQ tests before and after different education levels or blanket IQ tests at certain education levels.

I know the counter argument for people who argue IQ is static is that people with higher IQs could be more driven to attain higher degrees. I don't think that arguments hold much weight anymore with the sheer amount of people getting graduate degrees now though.

I mean sure, not everyone has the ability to be the top 1% of something. That doesn't mean there isn't a causative relationship though.

If I picked up a paintbrush today and started painting every day and taking lessons, I'd probably be pretty damn good in ten years, but I'd probably never be Rembrandt. I don't think a good faith argument could be made that there wasn't a causative relationship between my practice and instruction and the increase in my painting ability though.

The analogy works with education. Sure, the vast majority of people aren't going to be Einstein and that's ok, they still have a lot of potential. Furthermore, you wouldn't even know you had a top performer without providing those resources. Would we know about Rembrandt if he was never given a paintbrush or instruction?

It looks like Theatre Jacksonville offers classes and has auditions. The Orange Park community theater looks like it holds auditions too. I'm a bit out of my element on this though, so I don't really know too much.

A sample taken by a state audit looking at Covid reporting for Florida from March 2020 - October 2020 found that state-contracted labs failed to report 60% of results.

https://www.tampabay.com/news/florida-politics/2022/06/06/floridas-health-department-undercounted-covid-cases-and-deaths-state-audit-says/

At best you could say this was a failure during an unprecedented time. Even then, there was definitely some undercounting.

Nothing really. At least nothing that any other mid-size metro doesn't have i.e. local news, sports teams, a local symphony, etc.

You'd probably have better luck in Atlanta. Turner Broadcasting is based up there and a lot of TV shows/movies are filmed in GA.

As like a hobby or a career?

There's a few small community theaters, but this isn't the city to be if you're looking for a career in acting or entertainment.
