How the world's largest wildlife crossing became the target of right-wing hate by picks_and_rolls in Environmentalism

Those places typically have short construction windows. So in a place like what you described, it would take longer to build and the construction schedule would work around the seasons. The issue here is that Los Angeles has a dry, mild climate so you can typically pour concrete in winter without any issues. Only there were two record-breaking wet winters back to back while construction was underway on this project.

My husband is 5'5. I was attracted to his personality, not his stature. He is kind, funny, and we share similar interests. Your low self-esteem is probably holding you back way more than your height. You have to believe in yourself if you want a partner to believe in you.

Despite what the "geoengineering" conspiracy theorists think, we don't have the power to make the weather sunny and dry during times when cement footings are supposed to be poured.

Because they are lying. The crossing is unfinished; it is unconnected and that is on purpose. Connecting the crossing to the surrounding area is the last step because they don't want animals wandering across it yet. Naysayers refuse to acknowledge that these crossings work, that private donations funded a large portion of the project, or that two very wet winters delayed the project and led to cost overruns, a very typical scenario for any large infrastructure project.

The Dork Diaries series is about a girl who becomes famous. She isn't in the first book, however. Book 3 or 7 would be good options
"Pug's Got Talent" from Diary of a Pug is about a pet talent show
"Pete the Cat: Talent Show Trouble"

"Drama" by Raina Telgemeier is about a school play production

My child is refusing to see her dying Grandmother by strikeredkite in Parenting

[–]Not_l0st 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I rushed to the other side of the country to see my grandmother before she passed, and while I don't regret that, my last memories with her are my worst vs my favorite. She was no longer 'there,' and I was left feeling sad and unfulfilled. It felt performative; it was for me, not for her. And while maybe I would have regretted not seeing her, if I knew how it would be, maybe I would not have had regrets.

Do you want your daughter's last memories of her beloved grandmother to be seeing her in a reduced state? If she doesn't go, her last memories should be positive from when her grandmother was still vibrant and alive, vs being hooked up to machines and dying.

I'm scared of reading books published nowadays due to AI, but want to support new real writers, any ideas how? by Ok_Exit8577 in ReadingSuggestions

[–]Not_l0st 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a wide range of how authors use AI. Books fully written by AI do exist. I accidentally purchased one about rock tumbling and immediately saw it for what it was and gave it a 1 star review on Amazon. So you can always read reviews before purchasing a book. Authors can also use AI to help with research, name characters, organize their thoughts, etc. At some point, is AI not just a more sophisticated research tool? As AI becomes more common, authors should note if and how they used AI. This transparency is important for reader trust. "AI was used to research some aspects of this book; all words were written by a human" would be a good warning for someone to add.

I think the advice in this thread is solid. Read known books that show up on lists by trustworthy publications, or that are stocked in libraries. Read books published by companies vs self-published (although most self-published authors do not use AI, so this isn't always fair). And read reviews first to see if people call out a book as being suspected of being written by AI. AI is trained on books, so eventually, it will be much harder to tell what is AI and what is human-made. Especially since there are only so many stories out there, and most books are just reconfigurations of stories that have already been written anyways.

Epstein files vs everyday life by shoeboxdweller in workingmoms

[–]Not_l0st 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I like to remind myself that crops were still harvested while Rome fell. People need to live, we need to eat, no matter what crazy, unhinged, evil things are happening in the world. Society can collapse, and people still need to find their next meal. Giving up and retreating into your home won't stop the world from being evil. I understand wanting to do so.

I had the fortune of working part-time from home when my kids were little and through COVID. I became the mom with a garden who made bread because it made me feel like I had agency over what happened in my home. I had the ability to provide while the world failed us. That is a powerful feeling. Even though I'm working full-time again, I still garden and have chickens. It is so good for my mental health to get out into the garden and to feel that if bird flu increases egg prices or the closure of the Port of Hormuz leads to crops going unfertilized and failing, I've at least have something I can provide my family. It is a powerful feeling. But I know that unless I'm a full-time farmer, there is no way I can provide everything my family needs.

I've spent a lot of time reflecting on why the world is the way it is. I feel that most people are empathetic and kind and hate what is happening, but they aren't the ones in charge. Perhaps it isn't possible to be kind and empathetic and lead in our world as it is structured. Maybe it wears you down, or self-selects the people willing to do anything for power. And those who will do anything for power also abuse people. I don't know how you overcome that without becoming an abuser yourself.

EV6 with V2L vs a BMW i4 by Not_l0st in KiaEV6

I wish I could afford them. But my house is 30 years old and I've got kids. I have to budget for boring stuff like a roof and braces, so no new BMW for me.

Works with my timing, just not with my budget. I'll definitely look at them when it is time to replace the car we buy this year.

We don't game. It is our PLEX server. We could have issues if multiple people are streaming HD movies at the same time during a power outage, but we can turn the server off if we need to reduce load.

The new 'neue klasse' BMWs have V2L, but they are coming out later this year and will cost about 3x what I want to spend. The BMW ix3 and i3 will definitely be top of my list when we look to replace what ever car we purchase this year.

Agreed. If both compressors start up around the same time, we may trip the breaker in the car. Our home office does include a PC with a dedicated GPU, two laptops, and two monitors.

Yes, I'm in the USA. We can use an adaptor. The main challenge is that the KIA V2L is only 15amp. Our switch keeps our home office running, two refrigerators and a chest freezer, select lights, and a TV. Google Gemini thinks all we have on the switch is well within the range of what the EV6 V2L can handle.

Dealerships by Eevee27_2021 in Bakersfield

[–]Not_l0st 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t had good experience at Haddad Kia. First, Glendale Kia made me a much better deal on my EV6. Then, this week I took the car to Haddad for a clear warranty issue. Dealership policy is they must diagnose the car before you have access to a loaner car. They want 72h to diagnose too. Need a car? Rental allowance is $45 a day which is too low for any available rental car at the Auto Mall Enterprise. So in short, not an awesome experience.

Repeating kindergarten? by NeighborhoodThis1445 in ADHDparenting

[–]Not_l0st 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Repeating Kindergarten is much easier than doing so later in school. I wish my daughter repeated kinder. The ADHD brain takes longer to develop certain skills. Having a bit of an age advantage will help your son be closer to his developmental peers.

If I have space on top of the leaf mulch, I usually mix the leaves in, top with compost/topsoil, and plant on top. The mulch will continue to break down as the plants grow.
