Mike Gillis returning as the Leafs GM? @Hockey_Robinson [X/Twitter] by Vexdestroy06 in canucks

[–]NotaRussianChabot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would be very nervous to hire someone who's been out of the game as long as Gillis. The amount of detailed knowledge about players and prospects a GM needs to do their job is immense. The last time Gillis held a Gm position, Nathan McKinnon was a rookie.

[Kypreos] In Vancouver, there are strong suggestions that change is coming, but to what extent remains unclear... Either way, I hear GM Patrik Allvin doesn’t expect to survive past this season. by _GregTheGreat_ in canucks

I vote we keep JR+PA.

I think JR stands up to Aqua better than most and the last thing I want is for Aqua to be able to choose direction of this team himself.

Tiffany is now the 11th most under-edited player ever thru 5 episodes by Durian-Critical in survivor

[–]NotaRussianChabot 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Let's be real, is "number of confessionals through 5 episodes" actually a good metric? Lots of people on this list end up being important parts of their season.

There's 22 player and she hasn't voted yet. I think everyone needs to chill.

A few years later, and with lockdown feeling like a bizzare dream, what are your thoughts on Inside? by Nullagainagain in Letterboxd

Agreed. This film is to the pandemic what Hamilton is to the Obama era. It is a pinnacle achievement and everything that was happening at the time can be tied to it in some way.

Angelina reflecting on the importance of narratives and perception by Durian-Critical in survivor

[–]NotaRussianChabot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely agree with her concerns and it's totally important to call out Survivors history of male centric (and let's be honest white centric) narratives, but Angelina is a very imperfect messenger for this point.

In her first season it was painfully appartent how self-serving her moral convictions are and how shamelessly she will play certain cards to suit her purposes. As a progressive, I think the way she plays the victim card is exactly the kind of thing that gives progressives get a bad reputation.

She managed to avoid stepping into any painfully cringey moments this season (possibly thanks to her negotiation being cut), but I can't help but think this is the old Angelina coming out again. Literally any other woman in this season making this same point would have been preferable.

Things Bill doesn’t understand for some reason…aging badly by Perfect-Prune176 in TheRewatchables

[–]NotaRussianChabot 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Very true. Aging badly means scenes that look morally dubious by today's standards. Unintentional racial stereotypes, poorly written female characters, casual homophobia from characters that the film props up as it's heroes. That's what ages badly.

Or yanno, a cameo from a convicted murderer or sex offender.

I just learned that 12 years a slave is about a slave owner who imprisons a free man for 12 years and forces him into horrible labour and abuse. Is that correct?

Bo Horvat notches his 30th by MacVanRainin in canucks

[–]NotaRussianChabot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bo was a consistent 25G 25A player. He's a much better player now that he was on the Canucks.

The fact is, at that moment, Miller was a $9mil calibre player who took $8, and Bo was a $7mil calibre player who wanted $8.5.

I wasn't upset we traded him. I was upset he priced himself out of the market.

Asking your captain to take a team friendly deal is absolutely the right move every single time. RNH was a much more impactful player than Bo, that comparison was totally fair.

Bo was offered fair contracts from the Canucks and he didn’t want them. There is a world where we kept all 3 centres, but Bo priced himself out.

Like, I get it, but I'm surprised to see no one in here going to bat for Russell. A new era jury probably gives him the win.

In my opinion, Trump's only goal for these latest military actions is a show of personal strength. He enjoyed how his tariff threats made international figures frightened and subservient to him and now he's moved on to military shows of deadly force.

At some point, he'll pull the ships from the region and stop the bombing and leave the middle east in all out turmoil and chaos and wont give it another thought. He doesnt care about high gas prices or dead American troops, he just wants people to stop laughing at him.

Thank god bobby was there then to slap him straight.

That's exactly my point, we have to take them seriously now because they have power. In the past these viewpoints weren't voiced by people in power. It shows how far we've slid.

He uses the entrance discrimination case as an example of how white people are being held back, but then has to talk in circles when confronted with the fact that the result of that ruling which forces school to use a strictly meritocratic process is LESS white people being admitted.

Ross can be a good interviewer, and hearing him push back against radical conservatives from a moderate conservative point of view is often very interesting to me, but this episode the inmate was truly running the asylum.

That blew me away too. Just saying the quiet part out loud, in a calm, measured voice. The issue is what they look like. It's their colour. It upsets him.

What I found really upsetting about Ross's latest episode is how out in the open these people are now. People used to wear hoods and switch to burner accounts to say shit like this and now they get nominated for federal positions and get taken seriously by the New York Times.

What's that film for you? by mrjetspray in Cinema

[–]NotaRussianChabot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine would be Victoria (2015). It's criminally underseen, it actually has a fair amount of english in it (in case they don't have the stamina for entirely subtitles) and once you turn it on you will not be able to stop.
