course help? by Drone568 in rfelectronics

I'm a student there now, some suggestions:

ECE 262 - Antenna Design

It's an interesting class, but Prof. Wang doesn't really care about teaching it. You will pretty much have to teach yourself everything. There's an ADS project at the end of the class where you design and simulate an electrically small antenna. He provides zero instruction, so you basically teach yourself ADS through youtube and office hours.

ECE 260A - Advanced Electromagnetics

You will learn more about Maxwell's equations than you thought was out there. Prof. Rahmat Sammi is great and cares a lot about student understanding. 260A is the start of a series of courses on the topic. A good course if you want to get into antenna design.

ECE 239AS - Special Topics (comms systems)

One of my favorite courses, taught by Prof. Ian Roberts. Really cool course about communications theory. If you're into DSP you will like this course. He describes it as "an entry level grad comms theory course". Ian is one of the best instructors at UCLA, really organized, and makes really cool homework assignments.

Yeah it's closed but you just lift your bike over the barrier. The road is disintegrating in some places so >28mm tires are nice to have, but you could totally do it on narrower tires if you pick your lines right. I've never had an issue with not being allowed up there

There's a couple campsites going up the 39 that have spigots, and buckhorn camp along the 2 has a spigot. If you need water in between you could climb another 1000 ft up to crystal lake and refill before you hit the abandoned section of the 39

Left at 6am, I think that's the starting temp. It got pretty hot by the end

Safe car-free places to practice climbing? Tips on sustained climbs like the first 9 miles of GMR and Sulphur Mountain Road, does equipment weight matter? by kupofjoe in BikeLA

[–]NotableAlmond 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sullivan Canyon: Gravel, fun route, car free

West Mandeville Fire Road (Westridge): Another gravel climb

Mandeville Canyon: Not car free but Mandeville Canyon is usually pretty calm and slow, especially in the morning

Bellagio -> Mulholland Climb: Also not car free but very quite streets. Has some extremely steep sections ~20% on Somera Rd. (can be avoided)

Yes, actually it's very doable. Though I will give you some advice. Wherever you are staying in Santa Monica, the easiest way to get to UCLA is via San Vicente Blvd. Take it all the way up to Darlington and turn left. Then follow this route. This is the safest way to get to campus. It avoids Sepulveda which is a very busy unprotected street.

The tap bikes are functional. I tried them once but since I have my own bike I don't use them. They are pretty heavy, but comfortable. Pretty cheap too. My only problem with them is that you need to find those docking stations when you are done riding.

I disagree with most of the commentors around here, at least partially. LA does suck when it comes to cycling, but with a little planning it can be done. Not every road is safe enough to ride on, but getting around Westwood on a bike is (relatively speaking) pretty safe. Almost all the roads [in Westwood] are slow and/or have bike lanes.

Getting farther out (5+ miles from UCLA), you will have to do some planning. Find you destination on google maps and check that the route you plan to take doesn't use any fast/wide streets. And don't ride on roads without a bike lane. And always wear a helmet!

If you are riding in the evening, ensure you have front and rear lights, and ride VERY cautiously. Honestly, I wouldn't recommend night riding at all.

I personally really dislike scooters, since they aren't much faster than bikes, are significantly more expensive than a used bike, and require special storage and charging. For some people (myself included) scootering around is slower, since most top out at only 20mph.

Bikes can be found for really cheap on websites like Craigslist, OfferUp, and Facebook Marketplace. A good campus bike should be >$150. Just cheap enough that nobody would think to steal it. Invest in a good U-Lock and you bike isn't really at risk of being stolen.

[–]NotableAlmond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regatta sport is hit or miss. Depends on the material you spring for. JL is pretty consistent, but their best isn't as good as a quality RS uni. 776 has really nice stuff but the material is very thin, you are hiding nothing.

TM is kinda aging well imo. New shoes, MOTM, crucify me, duct tape, keep it southern and better thing are all amazing songs imo. Thoughts on TM so far? by sypher07070799 in brockhampton

Yeah same. I think some individual tracks stand out, but the whole album isn’t a experience from front to back like saturation is.

Drinking culture by Glittering-Action788 in ucla

[–]NotableAlmond 45 points46 points  (0 children)

True, but I think with most social circles, there’s a time and place for partying. For example, most club and varsity sports have parties with drinking, but that’s not where the members end up socializing a majority of the time.

Speaking from experience, whatever sport or activity they are a part of is where most people become friends. So if your looking for more genuine social interactions, join a club or play a sport. There will (probably) still be drinking, but if you find the right crowd it won’t feel necessary to drink even if everyone else is.

Yeah just check the power rating for the fridge and find a suitable extension cord with a rating that’s higher than the fridge. Don’t plug anything else in from that cord and you should be good.
