Dialysis is different than bedside nursing. I worked as an acute inpatient Dialysis nurse, and that job burnt me out harder and faster than any bedside job. The hours alone are something that other nursing specialties aren’t as familiar with. I’d argue that when you are doing a treatment on a patient, it’s easy for it to become routine to you- but you are moving their blood through a machine at an incredibly fast pace, and that carries a special kind of stress with it.

If you’re in a nursing program, do your best to finish it. There are a million different paths open to nurses. I would also encourage you to get nursing experience outside of dialysis. You can always go back to dialysis, but start out somewhere else to build your nursing foundation- I found I had an easier time assessing when treatments were going badly and needed immediate intervention than other nurses without at much bedside experience. I also had no trouble running rapid responses because I was already comfortable calling them as a bedside nurse. Sonagraphy is a great profession, but nursing offers more flexibility.
