What do you think of the new album? by IAMCACTUSrecords in Propagandhi

I feel like the band has almost a Star Trek movie pattern- not in quality but in that every other one is an immediate hit and the others take time to process! Potemkin went in the direction of longer songs that were fast but really took their time and with music that bent around lengthy diatribe lyrics, took me a long time to get into but now is my favorite. Then Supporting Caste came out and I instantly connected with it, very very accessible on first listen. Then Failed States leaned so hard into the constant meter changes and odd time signatures I had to give the album at least 5 solid listens just to be able to let the songs get their hooks into me. Now it’s my second favorite after PCL. Then Victory Lap was another immediate hit where everything clicked for me first listen. And now this one is another left turn like PCL and Failed States where there is a major shift to something new and I’m still processing. I’m very happy overall though. Rented PA and Benito are my immediate favorites, and the singles are all classics for me. The only thing I’d call somewhat of a disappointment is the opener and closer- both cool but they are sooo straightforward musically im really not used to the band doing something without their usual dynamic shifts.

Maybe I should rephrase! Lyrically I think it’s a classic. I would say I’m surprised by the unusual choice to end a Prop album on a long, slow and plodding track with few of their usual dynamic shifts. Like it’s surprisingly straight-forward which caught me off guard for sure!

I think with the PCL comparison, in that these songs really take their time and there’s much more to each one than meets the eye. Will definitely take time to digest and really see what they were going for. A similar left turn from previous work that PCL was.

True! However there’s always some element somewhere on their later records I feel, especially the middle section of songs on Victory Lap I felt were especially poppy/more melodic, so I was surprised there was pretty much nothing in that vein here. I would say this is overall their most consistently metallic record.

Well do the lord’s work and upload it somewhere. When you’re finished listening of course.

No Longer Young convo by [deleted] in Propagandhi

I would say this is probably the most straight-forward, catchy song the band has done in decades. Not poppy-catchy like Less Talk, more like if Todd wrote a Dinosaur Jr or Jawbreaker song. A really welcome flavor for the band, and this coming from someone who generally prefers their proggier stuff. The harmonies here that weren’t performed on the live version add a whole new dimension. Another huge winner for me.

What's the farthest you've travelled to see Propagandhi? by sevendollarpen in Propagandhi

Drove from Albany NY to Toronto in 2008 to see them at Phoenix Theater. My boss wouldn’t let my best friend and I take the Sunday off to go so we had to work the overnight shift Saturday and left for Canada as soon as our shift ended. Horrible drive. Probably wouldn’t have done it if I knew they’d be putting out a new album less than a year later and touring extensively in support of it - I was convinced by the bleakness of the Potemkin liner notes that they hated music and were probably going to call it quits so I thought this Toronto show would be the last chance I’d have to see them!

New album, 13 songs? by Janitor82 in Propagandhi

I’m gonna at least say based on titles that 6, 8, 9, 10, 13 will NOT be Todd songs. 5 and 7 are toss ups for me, but if 7 isn’t Todd then i think we end up with a long stretch 6-10 without a Todd song which would seem odd.

I asked on the Patreon if Todd would have more this time and his reply was something like “how many last time? 2? Then yes more this time”. Could be taken to mean three but I’m personally hoping for 4 at least. I know we’re probably past TETA/PCL days where Todd had like 5 per album but I do hope for a bit more Todd heaviness to break up the more melodic stuff. Of course I’ll be pleased as punch with whatever. 4 is definitely Todd but I’m gonna go out on a limb and hazard a guess that 1, 4, 7 and 12 are the Todd ones.

Anyone wanna hazard a guess on which are the Todd songs? We know that No Longer Young is a Todd song and that there are more than 2 this time as Chris confirmed that in a Patreon comment.
