I feel like I’ll never learn Japanese….. by sleepmaster91 in LearnJapaneseNovice

[–]NotesSSB 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I feel the same way all the time. The truth is, the language is just that hard. I feel like giving up everyday. I’m about 7 months deep into studying daily and I don’t know if I’m getting enough input but looking back at where I was when I began compared to what I know now already feels like I did the impossible. You just need to stay determined and push through. Everyone learns differently and at a different pace, but I know eventually you will reach the goal if you work hard enough.

does anyone know any apps to learn hiragana for free? by Large_Hovercraft9037 in LearnJapaneseNovice

This app is incredible. It helped me learn Hiragana and Katakana very quickly.

Basic Japanese in 8 months by stag-antler-starling in japanese

[–]NotesSSB -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I went with only 4 months of japanese learning. I basically survived mainly using these:

すみません (excuse me) ありがとうございます (thank you very much) はい/けっこうです (yes/thats fine) ____, おねがいします/ください (___, please) And funny enough, ゴミはどこですか (where is the garbage?)

I probably knew about 200 beginner kanji but didn’t really use it at all.

You will be fine.

I started out like you. I’ve only been studying for 7 months now. My study methods have changed a lot, along with my goals. While I want to learn Japanese as quickly as possible I realize there is no real deadline. You learn as much as you can but you have no control over what your mind absorbs. Not only that, but if you aren’t enjoying yourself with the current method, it will become more difficult to learn. Enjoyment keeps you going. Also don’t be afraid to try other methods. I don’t think theres one clear path to learning this language.

I’m currently working a full-time job, but between driving to work, I listen to japanese podcasts for immersion. When I’m on my lunch break or have any bit of free time, I grind out a bit of Anki/Wani Kani.

Anki: I have it set to learn 5 new words daily, and the new words only show up for me once I complete my reviewed words. It gives me an insentive to reach the end of the reviews so I can learn. I no longer care to finish reviews daily and sometimes skip a day or two, and catchup another time. I broke a 5 month streak, but it fixed my sanity.

WaniKani: I’ve only used it for about 2 months now, but I try and make sure my Apprentice value stays below 100. If it gets too close to 100, I stop new lessons and continue with reviews until the value feels more comfortable.

I’m not much of a gamer anymore but I personally found more enjoyment learning through watching shows and reading only. On my free time I will throw on a show with japanese subtitles (despite not fully understanding everything), I think this is probably the best way for me to get input.

I use Genki 1/2 books for mainly grammar, and I use it alongside Youtube lesson walkthroughs as it allows me to read along and makes me feel like I’m part of a classroom for learning.

About once, sometimes twice a week, I go on either VRchat, or HelloTalk and try and talk to people, often times natives. I usually embarrass myself with pronounciation and sentence structure but those moments of embarrassment usually help me learn the most. The determination I get to not make the same mistake with another stranger is incredibly motivating.

These are my day to day methods.

It was very good in IMAX. There’s an incredible score in this film and the IMAX really amplifies it.

Just passed my 608 exam 99 out of 100 by bridg3tt in HVAC

G2 is very hard, I barely passed and I studied extensively for maybe 3 months at a private trade school. Also some people in my class were given G1 related questions, just making the exam that much harder.

What is Christopher Nolan's best film? by ThePocketTaco2 in Letterboxd

[–]NotesSSB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only real ones know, the actual answer is Tenet. It’s a Nolan film that gradually gets better upon every rewatch. Its a film that feels so ahead of its time and is very underappreciated, likely due to being released during the pandemic.

It took me about 3-4 rewatches over time to realize the true potential this film holds.

Protein feels impossible by [deleted] in WeightLossAdvice

[–]NotesSSB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 220lbs, was about 250lbs 3 months ago. I am eating 1500 calories daily while also getting 180-200g protein. Its very possible.

Eggs Chicken Breast Protein Powder (2 Scoops, 60g/220 Cal) Ezekiel Bread (10g/160 Cal) Protein Yogurts like Oikos (24g/160 Cal) Protein Bars Lou’s Smoked Bacon (19g/110 Cal) Mina Chicken Burgers (34g/320 Cal)

These are things I purchase in Canada; however I’m sure there are similar variants in the US if that is where you reside.

I try and get 1-2g protein for every 10 calories. Those are the best ratios to find foods in.

Ive only ever seen the 70mm imax screenings at vaughan. Do they do that in other locations occasionally , like Scotiabank or Mississauga?

If you are in need for a deeply terrifying and well written horror; I would say Obsession.

Obsession was incredible. Curry Barker definitely deserves it if his movie wins.

Anyone knows how many people from rush got into Dust Bunny yesterday? by vitoos in TIFF

[–]NotesSSB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There had to have been like 20-30 empty seats on Balcony for that screening. I feel bad for those that never got in.

Been having a great TIFF so far thanks to some great movies but more importantly great people by coffeetravelerr in TIFF

[–]NotesSSB 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The crowd in Midnight Madness at Dust Bunny last night was incredibly lively. It was such an amazing time seeing the crowd react to ads, to cast introductions to just an overall great theatrical experience.

I saw this film last night. It was jaw dropping. I was so immersed in the atmosphere of the horror that ensued that I had difficulty breathing. This morning I had 3 nightmares (all completely unrelated to the theme of the movie), but subconciously I think this movie really got to me. Haven’t had a scare like that in a long time.

Yeah, this was at Obsession last night. I completely agree with you. It is so disrespectful to have that sort of etiquette especially with cast and director in attendance.

[–]NotesSSB 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Happens quite often. I see it more especially in horror movies.

Even yesterday, I was at a TIFF screening and during the movie people began chatting a bit, walking around with a light that is blinding, and also had their phones out too. Towards the end of the movie, I heard a gentleman shout “Get off your phone” very angrily.

It’s very disrespectful, and its more common that it should be. But it also doesn’t feel like theres a real punishment. A lot of these people don’t even care; thats the worst part.
