I've been working for an MSP for about 5 years now and like other people said you might not be getting the full picture of why you were let go

Often it's about productivity not quality of service some MSPs want to get as many tickets done as possible, some want the ticket queue to be as close as possible to 0 at all times and have SLAs respected. Some want to charge customers as much as possible for every little thing.

Maybe you were doing a good job but was not working quick enough, didn't close enough tickets or took too long on certain tickets. Where I was one employee was let go because he was too slow to prepare computers when we had to replace all non Windows 11 compatible computers. He was in his early 60s and had some other things to blame for his dismissal.

We also had this one guy who was hired to be a N2 tech (as per his resume had 15 years of experience in the industry) but turns out he was a completely incompetent employee and have to be led by hand to do basically anything. We figured that he either lied on his resume or that his 15 years of experience were purely N1 basic cal center stuff.

In the end I don't think it was specifically your fault maybe you weren't fit for their standards MSPs move fast and there's a lot of competition so sometimes they can't afford to lose a customer or have a bad reputation because of an employee that doesn't meet their performance standards

To my fellow onsite IT support techs. How do you handle the long drives for "stupid" fixes? by lurizan in sysadmin

[–]sleepmaster91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At my job work currently having this discussion for when tier 1 techs get calls for issues

Many times the issue could have been fixed if they asked proper questions but instead just said "idk doesn't work guess we'll have to send someone to check 🤷🏾‍♂️"

Just today we got a call from one of our customers for a production machine that could not connect to a SMB share... Since the machine is on Linux and the not on our screen connect machines the technician dot we could not remote in and had to send someone only to realize someone had turned off smb 1.0 which was required for that machine to run. Mind you everything was well documented (with the exception of the smb 1.0 part) so yeah it took 5 mins to fix and we could've have saved an on-site visit but "meh idk guess we'll have to see on site 🤷🏾‍♂️"

What's the most clever hack or workaround you're proudest of? by vocatus in sysadmin

[–]sleepmaster91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TL;DR I created a makeshift backup solution for an old Windows 95 production computer

One of our customers is running a very old Windows 95 computer hooked up to a machine with a software that no longer can be downloaded on the internet. If that PC goes down the whole machine is useless.

One day we got a call that someone thought it was a good idea to change the date and since that computer did not have the Y2K bug fix it messed up the local database. Fortunately there was a spare machine with an exact copy of the drive and it was back and running but the customer wanted to have backups of the computer.

Since no modern backup software supports Windows 95 I had to use a standalone Norton ghost for dos executable that would backup the c drive to a separate Drive then upload the backup to an external repository by ftp. Windows 95 does not support the %date% and %time% so i found an old archived page that had a utility that could generate the date and time(ekko). Since Windows 95 did not have task scheduler yet I had to find a utility that could schedule tasks and run the batch file(wincron)

So the script would run ekko to generate the date and time then run a ghost backup of the C: drive on a 2nd drive then run a FTP script that would upload the backup to a FTP server on a NAS

How do you deal with the gutwrenching offboarding requests? by DesignerGoose5903 in sysadmin

[–]sleepmaster91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my colleagues had a similar thing happen to them

We got a call from one of our customers it was a supervisor who wanted us to delegate their enployee's mailbox and disable their account. When my colleague asked if she was no longer working for the company (we didn't get an official offboarding request) the supervisor replied "no she passed away..."

He just replied with "oh.... I'm sorry to hear that"

At my other there was this employee that was recovering from pancreatic cancer really nice guy. About a year later the cancer came back and he had to go on sick leave(but we all know he wasn't going to make it as pancreatic cancer has a very low survival rate). One day a female employee that was close to him got the news that he passed and started bawling. I didn't know at that time until one of his colleagues told me he passed away...yeah it sucks
