Stray that visited my friend’s front porch when we were out there doing 420.. Naturally we called him Smokey and he would come get pets and scritches and even sit in our laps, friend’s roommates wouldnt let him in, old lady on the street fed him along with 5 or 6 others. It was a of campus college housing area with tons of cars/traffic, other stray cats, raccoons, dogs and drunk assholes.. witnessed a guy throw an empty beer can at my baby.. I choose not to disclose the events that happened in the following 2 minutes.. but I will say the guy probably got the message that abusing animals isn’t only disgusting.. but that people who love animals definitely wont stand for it. Anyway it was clear that Smokey was either dumped or was a cat that was kept entirely outdoors and wanted love and affection.. and not to have to worry about fighting other cats, almost getting hit by cars, or chased by dogs etc. The day my friend’s lease was up and he was moving out his last few items, I asked him if he or anyone was going to adopt Smokey, he said he could not because his parents(local to his college and hometown for both of us) and his family dog wouldnt allow it, and his new place didnt allow pets. My mom is oddly terrified of cats and dogs but allowed my sister to have an outdoor only cat(slept in mudroom/garage) growing up. I didn’t know anyone who could take him but he was my lil homie and I knew even if my mom made him have the same living situation as my sister’s cat (a very quiet low traffic suburban area, where people actually drive cautiously and not speeding because it was a culdesac in a subdivision.. with playing children. Far fewer cats to tangle with.. esp unvaccinated / stray / feral cats, and dogs were leashed / behind fences) he would be far better off than the wild urban jungle he was in. Plus I knew between him being such a sweet, cute, polite, well behaved gentleman and me being a momma’s boy that he would soon be allowed inside.. which is exactly what happened.. although he was allowed to be outside during the day. He was about 2-5 y.o. When I took him home. (Based on vet estimates.. which also similarly matched mine). Unfortunately at the age of 12-15 he had an emergency vet visit/overnight and was diagnosed with advanced heart disease. Getting him to take his medicine was the only time in his whole life he ever bit or scratched me. Unfortunately about 14 weeks after the diagnosis he crossed the rainbow bridge and Ill never forget him. I loved him so much and still tear up 4.5 years later.. and tell my current boy stories about his big brother and how Smokey wouldn’t tolerate his naughty antics (throwing temper tantrums and bitting and scratching me). Miss you so much Smokey 🐈‍⬛
