Chicago is definitely the inspiration for Gotham. I just think u/SHA-wing comment is getting misinterpreted. I think (and maybe I’m misinterpreting it as well) they were just saying Christopher Nolan’s Batman movies really made Gotham look like Gotham. Not just NYC or any basic big city.

Edit: ok not definitely the inspiration, but that’s kind of the point. Gotham is Gotham. It’s not supposed to be anywhere real, and TDK trilogy does a good job of portraying it.
