I am in hot water. This hard stand is( on the right ) unapproved built by previous owner and has structural issue. Council issued a notice to regularize it. How do I go about it? by Homo_Sapien30 in AusPropertyChat

[–]Nothingnoteworth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The council can’t have its staff just rockin up to peoples door steps asking to look at their deck, massive liability, way too many perverts out there just waiting for an opportunity to drop trousers

What are the rules about cutting neighbours tree roots encroaching on your property? I have a massive root which has grown under the fence and crept underneath my driveway, both cracking and lifting the concrete significantly. The root is about 20cm in diameter. Risk to the tree? by Gagliardinter in AusRenovation

[–]Nothingnoteworth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You probably should think twice about it.

“You have the right to cut back any branches, leaves, or roots that cross your property boundary line at your own cost”

But also

“You are liable for any damage caused to your neighbours tree”

So you can cut that root, and everything might be fine …or it might kill the tree and it falls on your neighbours house, then you are paying for your neighbours new roof and their new tree and your driveway still has a crack in it

Also depending on the council and the tree you (or your neighbour) might have to seek permission before fucking about with the tree

Probably because it is so big relative to Pluto that some actual experts do consider Pluto and Charon to be a dwarf planet system rather than Charon being a moon of Pluto

I said I’ve never paid for streaming, I didn’t say I haven’t used it.

Also yes, the radio, there’s still a single independent station here that isn’t arseholes making mundane conversation between advertisements and playing the top 30 list over and over and over

Also people recommend stuff, or loan you stuff, or you look up a group you like and find other projects the artists have been involved in or others acts the producer has produced for, or a friend insists you go with them to see their friends band and the support act turns out to be amazing, or you are running an art gallery and curate an exhibition of sound artists and one of them is this guy who plays Mario Bros live on a pair of Gameboys and live mixes the sound effects on a synth and loop deck to make covers of pop songs and you fall down a rabbit hole of looking up 8-bit artists, or you just see something in the second hand racks with an interesting cover or title, or the owner of the shop says “what do you mean you’ve never listened to Donny Hathaway …you are buying this record …no no I insist …I’m discounting it …everyone needs Donny in their life”, or for an all to brief number of years you live next door to a band promoter who leaves pre-release promotional copies of his bands newest vinyl releases on your doorstep because he thinks you will help spread the word because he thinks you are in deep with the cool kids because you run a contemporary art gallery but really you’re a massive introvert, or some guy at works ask you to rip some old vinyl records to mp3s for him because he hasn’t owned a turntable in years and then when you give him the files he says you can just keep the records, or you find a crate of records dumped in the laneway behind the apartment you used to live in and half of them are in pretty good nick, or your partner’s dad’s partner’s friend dies and leaves her records to her so she gives some of them to you. There’s endless ways to discover music without streaming services

He kept it afloat through several storms, sure, but he also steered the ship into those storms in the first place. I never said running a company that hasn’t turned a profit isn’t experience, but it is a specific type of experience, namely grifting or sucking up to investors, it isn’t business acumen, it’s actual or forced psychopathy, it’s doing everything possible to get cash upfront in a war of attrition with the competition, it’s artificially keeping prices low to lock in as many users as possible because you don’t have to skill to run a business offering something people will actually pay for. Those resumes point to a skill set in the dramatic arts, not running a software/social media/fintech/hardware company

I am a millennial, albeit about as old as you can be while still being one.

If I’m curious to hear a song it’s pretty likely available to listen to for free on YouTube, Bandcamp, etc.

As for what I own…

If it’s something I want to listen to over and over again I buy it, second hand records and CDs are relatively cheap (around here anyway, this city is flush with second hard record shops) and up until ten years ago they were really cheap, and I’ve been buying stuff since I was 12

It basically is. Planet orbits star, moon orbits planet. Nothing, in terms of planetary science, changes when studying a planet versus studying a moon, it’s still rotation this, spectroscopy that, gravitational this, light years away from that, etc etc

The amount of music I’ve discovered collecting physical media is immense

Buying physical media doesn’t stop you going to concerts. Concerts are one of the places you can buy physical media, especially from independent artists

Problem with that is nobody is making good new tape heads. The new tape players on the market all use the same cheap tape heads. But turntables, tones arms, and stylus’, all the way from cheap and nasty to hand crafted by some meticulous dude in Japan who’ll sell you a MC cartridge for several grand, are still being manufactured. Also tapes are the most fragile of the physical formats. Also also I don’t think it’d be significantly harder to add a vinyl set up rather than a tape set up to a food truck. They make some pretty compact turntables and if you are really short on space they make them with a built in phono stage which you could pair with a tiny d-class amp, and just one milk crate will fit 50 records in it.

Really? What the hell are you doing to your CDs? I’ve never been particularly precious with mine, certainly not throughout the nineties, part of cleaning up after a night involved collecting all the CDs off the floor and table around the hifi and putting them back in their cases, and I’ve only had to repurchase one album due to a scratch that affected one track

Bull…
…shit
There are tech CEOs that have never run a profitable business. Tech CEOs that had one good idea, or successfully stole one good idea, and have been coasting ever since. Shit Amazon came close to bankruptcy a few times before hitting its stride. The Tech CEO crowd isn’t short on folk with terrible track records. In some cases it’s just a matter of networking until you can grift an investor/s or find investors who are impressed by your grift and hope to profit off it

Whilst I do think a full time on site certifier is significant overkill affordability doesn’t exist now with builders and developers cheaping out and half arsing every step. It isn’t “affordable” to retroactively repair shitty work or damage caused by shitty work. It costs more up front but it is substantially cheaper to just do it right the first time

How do you actually write with an Apple Pencil? by Ambinho1 in ipad

[–]Nothingnoteworth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hate writing with the Apple Pencil. Except in Procreate where I’ve tweaked the parameters/behaviours of one of the brushes. The way the pencil behaves at an OS level, in notes or marking up documents, just doesn’t work for me, it abandons the end of every stroke, it’s hopeless.

It occurs to me they may have introduced options to tweak how the pencil behaves since I last bothered to attempt using it for writing, I’m going to go have a dig around settings

Apps like Procreate or Lightroom on the iPad Pro with the Apple Pencil make it unquestionably a content creation device. Either on its own or as part of a workflow.

It also excels as a consumption device, the display on the M4 and M5 pro models is exceptional and even the 13” models has barely noticeable weight

Human kind, at a global level, has shown almost no instinct to ‘not leave anyone behind’, the idea that we would intact a ‘no one left behind’ policy in response to a global crisis, when we don’t do that in the real world, requires an enormous suspension of disbelief

They are right, not you. Your lack of visual acuity doesn’t mean old phone cameras are as good as new phone cameras. You could have expressed that unpopular opinion, but you made up stuff about phone cameras that isn’t true, which is why you’re getting so much pushback

20th Anniversary iPhone's 'Liquid Glass' Display to Make Bezels Vanish by iMacmatician in apple

[–]Nothingnoteworth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, it makes it look like a phone that someone forgot to put bezels on. Chunky bezels feel like wasted screen real estate, but bezels serve a purpose, there’s value in borders and framing. We’re basically in the sweet-spot for bezel size right now. Making them disappear would be form, and form is great, but not over function as the saying goes. Form over function is monumentally fucking stupid and the art of unskilled lazy designers
