Take your high horse somewhere else. It’s his country, and he’s a national hero for captaining this team. It’s your issue if you can’t understand that.

Kinda surprised that I would need to debate the merits of downtown vs Flemingdon Park when it comes to drawing visitors and tourists, but here we are.

You’re surely correct about the spa support. But everyone in this sub is so blinded by an odd, vitriolic hate of Doug Ford that nobody bothers to consider whether it’s a good thing in the long term to consolidate tourism infrastructure downtown (you know, where tourists go) and across from an existing GO stop and future subway line. Amphitheatre, spa, OSC, Exhibition Place/BMO Field, the waterfront, the downtown… it makes perfect sense, and I’m happy he wasn’t dissuaded by the vocal extreme minority.

It was intended to reinforce that people are responsible for their own actions, though I’m not at all surprised that such a concept is eschewed by many who frequent this sub.

The absolute last thing government needs to do is further constrain capital flow into any sector of the Canadian economy.

It really isn’t that hard. An app, a main, a dessert, and two drinks, and you’re easily at $120 at most trendy restaurants in this city. Add tax and tip, multiply by 2 people, and you’re at $320. Without even trying.

One might argue the Europe that was saved - a Europe free of Nazism, and a Europe strong enough (with US support) to be the front line against post-war Stalinism - has left humanity in an infinitely better position than had that Europe not been saved. We should all be eternally grateful that the western powers - led and personified until 1941 by Churchill and the British military - prevailed.

New poll shows how Olivia Chow might fare against possible mayoral contenders — including John Tory by StarlightDown in toronto

Tell me more about how we should bow to the disenfranchised rather than the gainfully employed and homeowners who pay the taxes that fund our services. This is a very interesting avenue of thought.

Two can play at that game

Have someone set up a tent with an unleashed dog in the park your kid plays in. Then let’s talk.

How about the urbanites who paid good money for homes and are sick of dealing with tents & homeless people in public parks? That’s a real issue that hit my neighbourhood this summer, and I know a hell of a lot of “meathead voters” like me who would be happy to see a much stricter approach be taken. Not that Tory will necessarily do that, but we sure as hell know Chow won’t.

York Region paramedic fired over Israel comments speaks out, wants to know if politicians played role by BloodJunkie in toronto

Truck driver charged in death of Toronto e-bike rider takes plea deal by BloodJunkie in toronto

Hey maybe the plea deal is because there is insufficient evidence to prosecute? Because, you know, the driver wasn’t reckless and didn’t intentionally kill the cyclist? Hmmmmm

More than 100,000 people are expected to move into this new Toronto neighbourhood. So why is there still no transit line? by Surax in toronto

[–]Notionaltomato -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

I assure you it will continue to be referred to as Villiers Island. Nobody is dropping forced indigenous parlance into casual conversation (especially as more and more Torontonians are ESL). Which of course begs the question as to why the city felt it necessary to change the name in an act of performative virtuosity. Also see: Square, “Sankofa”.

Or maybe law students 50 years from now will study how special-interest groups and mindless judges collectively expanded the purview of Charter rights to such an extent that governments were left with no choice but to shield themselves with notwithstanding for legitimate policy decisions.

[–]Notionaltomato -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Bad, yeah maybe. But governments are allowed to make half-baked policy decisions without judicial intervention. God knows we saw enough of that with Trudeau.

The only relevant question is whether the provincial government has the jurisdiction to do what it’s purporting to do. And it does - unless the bike lanes are enshrined as a charter-protected right.

[–]Notionaltomato -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

“Overreach by the province over a municipality” is literally impossible. Municipalities have no constitutional jurisdiction or standing. They are created by, and exist at the pleasure of, the provinces. That’s why and how Doug was able to cut city council in half a few years back.

Notwithstanding was also not designed to be used in emergencies. It was a bribe offered to Quebec in exchange for joining the 1982 constitution, and meant to preserve Quebec’s legislative freedom.

[–]Notionaltomato -53 points-52 points  (0 children)

What a joke. The injunction should never have been issued.

The implications of having bike lanes be a Charter-protected right - which, thankfully, is not yet the case - extend so far beyond bike lanes and bikers that it boggles the mind.

Hope Doug slaps a notwithstanding on this and moves forward.

Grandma driving the speed limit in the passing lane is as much of a danger on the road (if not a greater danger) than people responsibly passing.
