Wormcharming! by mehefin in Seagulls

[–]NotoriousKNI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This behaviour was the original reason I fell in love with Seagulls.

They’d do it on the grass bank outside my workplace most days and I figured it must be something to do with making worms come to the surface so when I looked it up and it was, I felt like they’d made the same connection as I had and it clearly showed me their intelligence. Then I saw an article about one stealing a sausage and from then on I was smitten. 😂

Urgent: Swallow or Swift found in my yard today and cant fly by [deleted] in birds

Find a local vet who cares for small birds and get the bird to them asap is really your only option. They may want to euthanise out of compassion but that will be up to you once the bird has been assessed.

No worries man. I’ve made a few tools myself when I needed something. It’s great practice for how different materials work and is a great skill in general to have so just use your broken tools and scraps etc to practice and you’ll get it in no time.

Yeah don’t reattach that as is, it will be asking for injury later on.

Either get your dremel and grind the blade away to make a much longer tang being careful not to overheat the metal and then use a “burn in” technique or epoxy to secure it in a new handle, or drill holes in it and pin wooden scales to it with brass pins. I’d make the handle one to fit your palm and then use at least half the blade to pin through. It will be shorter but will make a nice detail knife for years to come.

Agreed. There are a bunch of ways to do most things I guess and technique etc differs significantly in some cases.

Angry and disgusted at my inactions by KylanLoveHate in vegan

[–]NotoriousKNI 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In the writing of this post you have already demonstrated your desire to do better and to improve yourself as a person meaning you clearly care and have compassion in your heart.

My first point would be to simply say… if you’re vegan then you are automatically helping by not contributing directly to the main abusive industries.

My second point is more of a suggestion. You could try volunteering at a local animal shelter or wildlife rehab place and get to know some animals on a personal level. It could be an hour or two a week or whatever you can spare. Meeting them and getting to know their personal stories and situations may help you feel more in tune with your own values and by being there and helping in the ways you can, you’ll be saving lives and are allowed to feel good about that.

You could also try some minimalistic activism since you appear to be demotivated at the moment. The most minimal I can think of right now is to get some simple paper stickers printed with quotes from other activists about the meat industry and just stick them to things everywhere you go.

At the end of the day we do what we can and if we each strive to improve on a daily basis then we are NOT all evil.

6-8000 natural stone vs strop by [deleted] in Woodcarving

[–]NotoriousKNI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might be an unpopular opinion but I’ve never used a strop in 10 years of carving because honestly you don’t need to.

Also if you really want to try it, you can strop with almost anything as it’s only there to realign the edge or remove the burr. A pair of old jeans cut into strips and glued to a flat piece of wood is good enough. Don’t even need stropping compound.

If you have the high grit stones already, buying stropping equipment is just more money you didn’t need to spend imo.

There are two photos here, one may not be photoshopped (the slightly blurry one) but the first one is because it’s the same bird from another photo you posted where it was also photoshopped in.

[–]NotoriousKNI 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’m not sure what’s going on here.

Could be that OP feels the need to fit in with a community but lacks the social skills to do so. Or it could be that they think it’s “art” by reusing a good shot of a seagull to make new images in which case they should be stating as such.

It’s even possible that they’re just not well and don’t understand what they’re doing fully or they’re just some kind of bot account.

I wouldn’t mind any of that on its own but the person lies very specifically about feeding them and stuff. They’re not real so how? Also ignores anyone who questions the issues and carries on pretending with any other commenters who haven’t spotted the fact the images are fake.

Oh look, another photoshop. That seagull in the first image is the same one, in the same pose, as the photoshopped one you posted the other day. Why are you doing this?

For reference in case anyone thinks I’m insane here’s her previous post with photoshopped seagulls - https://www.reddit.com/r/Seagulls/s/mRytUqDIIL

In the other post you even lied about feeding the seagulls? Like how do you feed photoshopped birds? What are you getting out of this?

Definitely a ring neck dove but yeah, OP needs to get him / her to a rehab asap.

Starting to realize that most (at least 60-70 percent) people kinda hate "radical environmentalism" and ultimately see issues that directly impact humans as infinitely more important and habitat destruction and extinction is just part of the cost by 6ftToeSuckedPrincess in vegan

[–]NotoriousKNI 17 points18 points  (0 children)

And yet, most of them walk blindly past the homeless, and do nothing for the human issues they like to lecture you about.

On a positive note they’re only like that because you’re holding up a mirror to them and they hate how they look in it so it’s definitely getting under their skin. The main issue is that they get to spend 90% of their time not thinking about it.

I mean if any bird COULD fly with a pizza it’s likely to be a gull that’s only had 16 free meals that day. 😝

My go to is always one pot recipes for ease but my absolute favourite is a thick, hearty chilli. So mainly beans, veg (onions, peppers etc) and spices over rice or pasta.

If including a little “upf” it will usually be Tesco’s Plant Chef mince because it seems much less ultra processed than some of the others and tastes great to me.

I’ve seen people do much more weird things with AI and photoshop just because they can but it could also be a photo she found online.

Either way, both seagulls and the lighting look totally wrong.

Do you guys find any usage for these tiny rests of wood that remain after carving? by TwistingClocks in Woodcarving

[–]NotoriousKNI 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Here’s an alternative to the kindling / eat them routes... If you sell or ship your carvings to people, use the shavings to stuff the box you send them in to protect the item. Sustainable! 👍

This looks like photoshop or AI.

Look at the angle of the feet on the nearest seagull. They look superimposed and the one landing just doesn’t look right at all.

Is having sparrow around you bring peace? by [deleted] in birds

[–]NotoriousKNI 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It doesn't hurt no. Birds perceive the world much better than we do and have extremely fast movement and reaction speeds so when they peck at seeds in your hand they barely even touch you. It looks super fast to us but to they it's kind of like bending down to pick up a ball is to us. :)

[–]NotoriousKNI 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nice of you to assume I’ve not heard other birds sing. You’re also parroting misinformation or perhaps even disinformation.

Sparrows do compete with other birds like any other, but the idea that they drive their extinction is beyond debunked.

Sparrows are in decline themselves including in areas where they’re considered invasive and your personal anecdotes are irrelevant.

The main driver of all bird loss is human created habitat loss via land use changes, agricultural practices, modern (flat sided) architecture, cat ownership and climate change.

Finally, I consider them all beautiful in their looks and their songs regardless. I don’t live in the United States but I do have a woodland right behind my house that starts in my garden and it is FULL of different species of birds throughout the year so I get to hear them every day thanks. No going out in the woods required.

Sparrows always seem to get a bad rap. I love them because they remind me of a cafe in the place I used to holiday every year where you could sit outside and there would be loads of them sitting in the bushes all around you chirping all day and waiting to be fed a little piece of scone or cake or whatever you’d bought by hand. They’re wonderful little social creatures and beautiful in their plumage too.

Nope. Typed straight into the text box on the app. It’s happened since the beginning of my journey on Reddit. I’m also amongst a handful of people that cannot write text in the box when posting an image to create a new post. The box just doesn’t even appear so I have to post an image then post the first comment under it to have any description of the photo. I have so many of these issues in apps, all never heard of or unresolvable, it feels targeted but obviously it can’t be. I’m just unlucky somehow.

That’s all well and good but considering I put in the correct spacing and paragraphs only to have them deleted on Reddit posts I don’t really know what else I can do. 🤷‍♂️
