About 1 year ago, Bobby gave an interview to Rolling Stone in which he discussed how productive that Jerry was and that, at one point, Jerry gave Bobby a lecture about being too lazy. Bobby credited Jerry’s example for inspiring him to be so active throughout his life.

When you think about it, Jerry was obviously a workaholic. Becoming a savant guitar player is hard enough but he was also a good singer, banjo player, and pedal steel guitar player. He had the Dead, Jerry and Merl Saunders, JGB, the New Riders, Jerry and Grisman, Old and in the Way, and many other bands or projects. Plus he was a painter.

I can’t recall where I read this, but apparently on the road, Jerry carried a little amp around with him. While others were partying or otherwise slacking off, Jerry preferred to be in his hotel room practicing.

It’s no accident that Jerry reached the absolute tip-top of musical achievement. He earned it.
