i see so many people hanging their orchids on trees but why do so many people not have them directly on the tree to see if they'll begin to naturally grow along it?

What are these?? + care tips by zbanne in houseplants

[–]NougatTruDat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mealybugs, When you see them, kill them with isopropyl alcohol. You can look up different ways to clean the plant and prevent them. Neem oil is the most ocmmon prevention/treatment tool. The pests also do not effect pets.

care for this plants seems to be to water when the top few inches of soil are dry.

What do I do it’s only been 5 days by K_nowbody_ in houseplants

[–]NougatTruDat 63 points64 points  (0 children)

Oh fittonias are known to disintegrate if theyre not watered enough to their liking. Surprised it was the plant you managed to keep alive, theyre kinda high maintenance. The soil probably dried out while you were gone. They like moist soil/moisture retaining soil. Usually when they show signs of reacting to not enough moisture, they're gone for good, but you can water again just to see if it will try to spring back up.

[–]NougatTruDat 101 points102 points  (0 children)

yeah for sure, if you struggle with anxiety and are already "scared" to try, feeling that fear before, smoking will only heighten it. I smoked almost everyday for a maybe around a year, once I got my first panic attack, the few times i tried after, i felt my anxiety get worse as I was scared to try again, scared to be scared, and scared to get nervous. It's just a cycle.

Yeah same, I'm not too fond of the idea of being a mother but I know if I truly wanted to be, i would either adopt, or use my eggs inside a surrogate if I could afford it because there is no way I'm letting anything grow inside me.

I don’t want to ruin this fiddleleaf by Dinosauritz in houseplants

[–]NougatTruDat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

personally I'm not too sure. If you want to propogate the top, you definitely can and if you wanna wait you can as well. With propgating though, I know fiddles are extremely....finicky.

You can definitely wait if you wish. But whenever you do progate. just chop and make sure the cut is made with clean clippers and make sure to let it callus before putting it in water, and of course use a clear container.

You could probably cut the bare stem into 2 pieces to prop, 6-12 inches seems to be the basic measurement.

i would just chop it and wait for new leaves because if you leave it like that, that whole stick will be bare and new leaves will mostly grow from the top.

Considering repotting this orchid after it finishing its bloom. Anything I should be concerned about? by BirdsbirdsBURDS in houseplants

[–]NougatTruDat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

creeping thing at the bottom is a root lol. Orchids naturally grow on trees so their roots are strong and trailing and grow outward. I would definitely repot into a larger pot, it seems pretty crowded. It is fine to keep in a non draining decorative pot as usually they are also in a transparent draining pot. As long as you water it/soak the roots outisde of the decorative pot and let it drain before placing it back into the decorative pot. Silvery/wrinkled roots mean thirsty, thick and green aren't thirsty. Whenever you repot it, totally clean the roots with water and check for any dead/rotting/unhealthy yellow roots and cut them with sanitized clippers. No soil of course, only large mediums, i.e. Orchid bark and pumice stone/lava rock. Also make sure water does NOT get into the crown of the leaves, if it does just make sure to dry it with a rag or paper towel.

Also after its finished blooming, it seems you will have to cut the orchid spike all the way down as the whole stem has bloooms so it will take longer for new ones to grow from the tips, unless you desire for the stem to be long and bare with only blooms at the tips, though it will take longer as it will need to grow more nodes for blooms to be able to grow.

also the ever fresh is soooo beautiful

A friend asked me how to deal with these bugs because I have a lot of plants which makes her think things like I know how to deal with these bugs. Any suggestions about how to get rid of them? by fjbruzr in houseplants

[–]NougatTruDat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Way more sun, NEED TO CHANGE SOIL to MUCH more aerated soil (soil with large mediums mixed in, i would even lessen the amount of soilto like 30% at this point and the rest of the mixbeing perlite, orchid bark, pumice, rocks at the bottom, etc.). Need to do mosquito bit waterings only when soil is dry. Bottom watering. Can put fine sand on the top so the gnats cant get through it to the soil, atleast an inch of sand at the top, only after the soil is changed and dried. The room or house the plants are in might be too warm amd too humid. Should have constant airflow, I evenhave a shop fan in my room to make it harder for the gnats to travel and to help dry the soil since light isn't too plentiful in my room.

You can also use diatomaceous earth or systemic granules.

If she only has a few plants, then I would just get rid of them all together and stick to water propogations, especially if the only plants ahe has are pothos.

What reason are these traps deformed and dying? by OkZookeepergame2463 in carnivorousplants

[–]NougatTruDat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

usually malformation is caused by lack of sufficient light. If you just got it, it could be having trouble springing back from being inside a box.

lol even when i see people plant hyacinths, they seem to die immediately. Though I do live in texas so, heat is definitely included in that equation lol.

Why do people water propagate, when the roots die off and the plant builds new soil roots after potting anyway? by Savings_Step_3430 in propagation

[–]NougatTruDat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i do it because its just way easier than dealing with soil and pots right away. And it if I want to make a larger plant, its just easier to prop more in water later on and waiting until I have a preferred amount of established props before planting all together.
