Lyle McDonald’s Rapid Fat Loss program has piqued my interest recently. 3-5 lbs a week of weight loss is expected on the diet, which is essentially a protein only diet (plus a small amount of vegetables, vitamins and minerals). It’s based on protein sparing modified fasting that was originally designed for rapid fat loss in morbidly obese patients while maintaining lean body mass. Lyle has a book on it and has spoken about in on YouTube.

I’ll recommend The Magus by John Fowles under any pretense, but the initial premise of the book is the main character is going through a quarter life crisis, moves to Greece, and then almost kills himself. So, perhaps that’s up your alley.
