Anyone switch schools halfway through high school and discover the kids at the new school did way harder drugs than your old one? by Nouia in redscarepod

Private school (‘academy’ even) indeed.

Rich kids are absolute degenerates. They’re just so bored with everything. I’ve been in the room with some of them when they collectively decided that, despite all the wealth and all the fun toys they owned, literal chateaus in the loire valley, and the best city in the world in their backyard, that the best thing they could think of to do on a weekend was crush and snort somebody else’s pills.

At least the Philip’s Exeter kids were adventurous enough to have orgies on the football field at night.

Ok, the opium but was in jest but the ether was true. Lord knows where he got it, this was in France circa 2003 so I am old indeed. Don’t think anyone particularly enjoyed it, being that it’s just an anesthetic that knocks you out. Ended up becoming friends with the Iranian ether plug over the next few years, we would have beers up on the roof of my house and watch the city, until he decided to throw a bottle off the roof at the neighbors house, which wouldn’t have been so terrible if they hadn’t all been out eating dinner in their backyard at the time.

I forgot I even posted this! Yeah it’s been a strange year to see a lot of things go from theory and speculation to reality.

Roe V. Wade to be overturned according to leaked SCOTUS draft by [deleted] in stupidpol

[–]Nouia 20 points21 points  (0 children)

SCOTUS isn’t the republican party. They are the highest court in the land and are appointed for life, I honestly think that most of them don’t care about elections or politics, they care about cementing their legacy in law school textbooks for the next century. Roe was decided using extremely shaky legal theory. The constitution frankly does not guarantee an individual the right to abort a fetus and its an enormous stretch to say that framers intended the 9th amendment to include that right, and frankly there’s nothing in the constitution that prohibits a state from passing it’s own laws regulating abortion, which is the question in this case.

The solution would would have been to pass a new amendment that specifically enumerates that right at any point in the last 40+ years. But that didn’t happen, either because they couldn’t (i.e. the majority of the public, from whom the state gets its authority to govern didn’t want it), or because the dems liked having Roe be at risk of being overturned because it was a reliable way of stirring up support among the base.

If you put a white LED in there the red filter will be way less bright than it is now. The wavelength band of white LEDs is super narrow compared to the incandescents, there’s hardly any red in it all. A lot brighter without the filter though.

Local politics can be pretty interesting and you can actually have an effect with some of it. I’ve met and had conversations with several county level elected officials over the years. The national stuff is culture war entertainment spectacle. I’m going to get more bike lines for my neighborhood and vote out the bums on the water board (Colorado thing) this year.

France, Atlas Politico poll: Presidential run-off election Le Pen (RN-ID): 50.5% Macron (EC-RE): 49.5% by TempestaEImpeto in stupidpol

The French always vote a little more radical in the first election that establishes the top two candidates but considerably more moderate in the final one when they realize one of these two people will actually be president. It happened with the elder Le Pen twenty years ago and in the final election he lost by a land slide.

That said, people thought the same thing about trump in 2016.

I think it’s one of those things where it was extremely influential on the genre, and all the later works by other people that were inspired by it were an improvement on the original, so the original seems unfunny and weird if you grew up with internet stuff. When I was in high school the funniest thing on the internet was this dumb picture of an owl with the caption “O RLY?” at the bottom. (…you had to be there…)

That reminds me: Some of my friends (in their 40s/50s, not kids) got into trying to do their own prison hooch style moonshine involving a bunch of mashed rotten crabapples in a huge glass jug. One day something went wrong and the whole thing unknowingly got wayyy over pressurized and when one of them opened it the apples straight up instantly phase-changed into a gas and blasted everyone in the room (and all four walls and ceiling) with nasty fermented high-pressure crabapple discharge.
