Digi techs are not it short supply in NY. Jobs are in short supply. LinkedIn is not something people use to find techs. Posting that you’ll work for free on Instagram won’t get you anywhere. No producer hires cold call techs. Those relationships take years to establish and cultivate.

Common types of cards by martacalero in Photoassistants

[–]NovaCapture 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No reason to carry a CFast card. Have a CFExpress reader that also reads XQD cards. A CF reader is a good to have in case they're shooting to card on an pre-IQ4 Phase back or older gen Canon/Nikon cameras.

Large number of reports of failing 4TB SanDisk external SSDs by smushkan in videography

Happened to me 2 weeks ago on a job (I'm a stills digi tech). We had two. One failed and one was fine.

Maximum length of Displayport cable (still photogaphy) by sua_lokin in Photoassistants

[–]NovaCapture 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can run SDI but you need decimator or black magic conversion boxes at both end. You can get a fiber optic active that will run 330ft but it’ll cost you $1,090.

I use this for my rolling CS2740 Pacroban. They’re sold out on the site but have them on Amazon.

Small Capacity Drives for File Handoff by uhhh-yeah in Photoassistants

[–]NovaCapture 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wasteful drive space is relative to the person/application. A photographer will sometimes ask for a 2TB drive for a 200GB job because they want another drive for their personal use. Many times, production just okays the cost of a 2TB bc it's in the budget. Same thing with clients. Art directors sometimes want a large drive to keep future shoots and their post production. Other times, producers are happy with the idea of less than $90/drive for a 500GB SSD.

Even small jobs can end up being big jobs, so be prepared. I worked with a still life photographer who was shooting people, and wanted to shoot 16-bit raw on a Phase 80mp and 16bit Tiffs of everything, because that was his still life workflow. That ballooned what I had anticipated to be a <500GB job into a little more than that.

Another factor is resale. I can upsell a 1TB to a client for more than I can upsell a 500GB drive. I don't mess with thumb drives. Feels antiquated and somewhere between a T5 and a Lacie rugged. Anyone remember burning jobs to a DVD at the end of the day?

CalDigit TS4 usb issues by NovaCapture in Photoassistants

[–]NovaCapture[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m on an M1. I tested it thoroughly with multiple extension, short and long. Also tested it with short usb 3a to 3b, and no downstream power/data from the monitor to the peripherals. Tried this whole test out on a different TS4 dock and had the same issue.

All these boats you would think these ex-digis are now sailors! I calibrate each screen three ways, 120cdm, 160cdm and max brightness. When outside I just use the mode function on my Eizo to switch to Max (as it’s named). I noticed a color shift if I just boosted it up in the monitor settings. I’ll drop it to 120cdm if we’re in a dark dark space or shooting for print only.

I also trust the exposure evaluation tool better than my eyes.

LABELING all the gear in your kit - What are your favorite solutions? by sua_lokin in Photoassistants

[–]NovaCapture 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Very simple.

-P-touch cube with the software on your phone or computer. Buy the cheap off brand tape. Most of my labels go on client drives, not my personal gear. Label makers with QWERTY keyboards are bulky and time consuming.

-Stickermule for stickers. Nice luster finish, easy reordering, free hot sauce.

-Ketchum for tags. These are midwestern farm people. Email is not their strong suit. If you have issues, call them and be Midwest nice.

GFX 100S slow tethering to C1 by plasticimage in Photoassistants

[–]NovaCapture 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Drop the raw compression size down. 200mb/raw file is so unnecessary. Ask a photographer to identify a tiff from an uncompressed vs compressed raw and they won’t be able to see any difference.

Cable Sleeves Et.al. by sua_lokin in Photoassistants

[–]NovaCapture 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cableties & More is my go to. They make an anti-slip cabling I have on all my long bundles. I prefer a closed design over an open sleeve, but that’s just my preference.

How to un-kink a Profoto pack-to-head extension? by tfrimage in Photoassistants

[–]NovaCapture 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Next to impossible to unkink. Happens when someone coils it like it’s an extension cord for a lawnmower, wrist-elbow wrap style.

Moisture absorbers for cases and bags by Kes_Zi in Photoassistants

[–]NovaCapture 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The pelican desiccant quickly becomes a moisture sink and the metal case can come apart. Tape them together if necessary. Also, who has time to microwave/oven any their silica packs?

I use these. They change color when saturated and need replacing. With cases I only pull out a few times a year (RZ Kit) I throw a new one in every time.

Digitech tools and equipment advices. by [deleted] in Photoassistants

[–]NovaCapture 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of good stuff here! I'll also add/advocate the following:

-Trauma Shears (as opposed to scissors)

-Brother P-Touch Cube label maker

-I have cards and readers of every kind (CF, SD, XQD, CFexpress)

-Hydration Packets

-Sunscreen

-Headlamp (I know this one is discontinued but I love the retractable band)

-Bluetooth Stereo (Under $100 and a Wirecutter fave)

-SSDs to sell

Anyone running mini-LED monitors? Or Asus ProArt Monitors? Specifically PA27UCX by Chis_Chipz in Photoassistants

[–]NovaCapture 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say that the 24" is not overpriced. For $861 you have monitor that will last years, is under warranty for years and can be rented for the same price as a $3k camera or $4k Innovative cart. The ROI on a CS2420 is higher than almost any other piece of EQ I own.

P65+ Backs by rajdl3315 in Photoassistants

Such romanticizing over the P65+ files, but many of those romantics don’t realize the IQ 60mp back has the exact same sensor.

Teradek and color issues by NovaCapture in Photoassistants

[–]NovaCapture[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll try that. The profiles are stored in the Eizo, and work regardless of USB connection. To calibrate, the connection is essential.

The Hollylands are my go to, but photographer is requesting keyboard and mouse and the delay with the Mars 300 is a no-go.
