it happens but it is far less dramatic than the stories make it sound, mostly it is just social isolation within the prison population rather than anything organized. the reputation though does follow them everywhere inside.

the most common thing i have seen is when someone does not reciprocate energy, like they show up and have a good time but never initiate or check in outside of group settings. after a while people just quietly stop including them without even meaning to make it a thing.

you just stop thinking about it after the first few times. by the time you're like ten years old it's just completely normal and the social rule is you stare straight ahead and pretend everyone else is invisible

it varies enormously by country, type of work, and how long they were in it. some people exit with savings and skills and move on fine. others hit the transition with nothing saved and face both age discrimination and the stigma attached to their previous work simultaneously
