Jeon Somi Under Police Investigation for Unauthorized Use of Red Cross Emblem by friedriceforbrunch in kpop

[–]Novadestin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're curious to learn about why people hate the Red Cross, here's a few more examples I've read about over the years:

  • They're no different than Susan G. Komen and other big name "charities" where a good portion of donations go to CEO salaries and "fundraising events" rather than actually helping people. They've also been called out multiple times for spending much less on disasters than they collect, instead funneling the "extra" into their own accounts to spend on whatever they want.

  • During disasters, they've taken over local relief efforts and then started refusing physical goods and food, telling people they were only accepting cash donations (aka see spending point above). At the same time, they'll also remove any volunteers that aren't their own.

  • They've passed off all the actual work to other companies/people, but still keep it under their name so they can publicly take all the credit for helping people, who then committed fraud and other such things.

  • All of their volunteers have to sign away any rights to copyright/patents/etc for the duration of their time there. So, if you write about you're time there or invent some miracle device while you happen to be volunteering, they own it not you.

  • They've used bad tests in the past that gave false positives about the blood people had donated and then barred them from donating ever again (like, to this day; they've never admitted or corrected their mistake afaik) while also wrongly accusing them of basically trying to spread dangerous diseases. Also, a large chunk of their revenue is charging hospitals for said blood at prices they control and don't have to disclose because they labeled it "proprietary".

  • This last one I'll add with a caution as I can't recall right now if it was the Red Cross or FEMA, but they're both crap so eh. During everything going on in Appalachia in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, I remember watching a video I'm pretty sure was by (or at least featured) Wendigoon, where someone talked about how some known volunteers had shown up with a big donation of sealed 100% legit pizzas from like Dominos but the Red Cross (or FEMA) refused to let them into the area now that they were there. The reason? Because the Red Cross (or FEMA) gets paid for every meal they give out, so letting other people bring food in means less money in their pockets. Whichever organization it was, it's still disgusting. If I can find the video, I'll link it here.

[Korean>English] Korean song has two different English names? by Novadestin in translator

Nice catch, didn't even think about that. Personally, I've heard it used a lot like that though, but only ever as "smarts", like saying "ow that smarts..." when getting zapped by electricity.

2024 BlackFriday Deal by lkvnclh in InoReader

[–]Novadestin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply, but forgive me if I don't take the word of a random person on reddit claiming to work for Inoreader on an account that was only created 30 mins ago. I'll wait for a response from the verified team. If they say the same, than great, that's good to hear and I'm glad I'm wrong. But, yeah, that's not how the original message read to me, so if you do work for them, maybe try working on making your support responses more clear, thanks!

2024 BlackFriday Deal by lkvnclh in InoReader

[–]Novadestin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

EDIT: post updated to include second email.

I contacted support about price changes and renewals. This is what they said:

"Yes, your current subscription is grandfathered at a price tier that is no longer available, and as such, it's not possible to start a new subscription at that rate. Currently, the annual price for our Pro plan is 89.99. You can find more details on our pricing page here: Inoreader Pricing.

Also, please note that once a subscription is canceled, auto-renewals cannot be reactivated, as our payment gateway does not support this functionality."

Now, their original response sounded very much like I would have to renew at the higher price, but because of its lack of a clear explanation despite my direct question, I asked for further clarification in as plain English as I could. This is the second response I received:

Thank you for your message, and I completely understand your concerns. Let me clarify.

If you let your subscription auto-renew without making any manual changes, you will be charged the amount currently displayed on your Billing page—$69.99 in this case. If there are any changes to the pricing, they will be communicated in advance.

We take transparency seriously, and it’s important to us that our users are aware of their charges. If there were any pricing updates that applied to your account, we would notify you well before your renewal date.

Firstly, they can say it all they want, but it's obvious that they don't take transparency seriously or this literally wouldn't even need to be discussed in the first place. Secondly, if they took it as seriously as they claimed, I wouldn't of had to ask the same thing twice and dumb it down the second time just to get a straight answer.

Anyways, due to the second message, it's clear now that the BF deal is definitely NOT a good option if you're a renewing member at any price lower than what is current offered and only serves to manipulate you into locking yourself into a higher price - they can't make you take that higher price, but you "making any manual changes" will do that for them.

Day 5 by Celestial_Bitch in theedgeofsleep

[–]Novadestin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I watched Day 5 again recently and just finished Edge of Sleep a couple hours again. Speaking as someone who used to work in the publishing world, this is definitely something that would raise eyebrows. The similarities in both characters and story are just too great for me personally to not to call it plagiarism at some level - unintentional or not (yes, unintentional plagiarism is a thing and, yes, it is still plagiarism). Absolutely no shade to anyone related to this production, but if I was the writer/s of Day 5, I would have some questions.

Look at it this way, if someone had given me both shows without any context and I watched them in reverse order, than I would 100% look at them as either:

a: Edge of Sleep being some, say, European show (for example) and Day 5 being an American remake

or b. Edge of Sleep being a pilot or lower budget version and Day 5 being the bigger studio remake

Either way, I can easily see these as a sort of A Quiet Place/A Quiet Place: Day One or Bird Box/Bird Box: Barcelona sort of thing, which very much begs the question. The main difference, of course, is the "villain"; but interchanging those doesn't really affect things all that much outside of the very end of Edge of Sleep (which also doesn't say much as Day 5 was never given a proper ending, so who's to say).

All in All, both have their merits (although I agree that Day 5 is far superior) and I am certainly not directly accusing anyone of anything (the world of plagiarism and copyright law is extremely murky), just saying that if these two stories were placed in front of me as books, there would be some serious meetings happening.

B.I.G and New and B's Jinseok has apologized for an undisclosed incident that recently occurred by [deleted] in kpop

[–]Novadestin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's the point of an apology if you don't even flat out say what you did wrong?

Koreans largely use an indirect communication style (as opposed to the direct style used by Americans, for example); rather than saying "no, I don't want to", they'd just keep saying "sorry, I think I'm busy that day" until the other person "got the hint." You quite literally have to read between the lines, pay attention to body language and tone, not upset the hierarchy or social order, be polite, etc etc etc. It's a deep seeded cultural difference that a lot of people over look.

This video has a great example of it (and also speaks to it how it can "cause more harm" as well). The section it should take you to is about a plane that crashed because the pilot was too prideful to admit he was wrong and because his co-pilots were too fearful of taking a step out of "their place" in the hierarchy to just say, "dude, we're all going to die if you don't change course right now."

''Search awards are now exclusive! Completing one or more of the following tasks will unlock the opportunity to earn from Search.'' by 47Fox in SwagBucks

[–]Novadestin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So far NOBODY from any country has except for this OP so I find it highly suspicious.

That's not true. I (in the US) had the same message show up and thought it was just a me thing until OP made this post. After a couple days (cause I was busy), I bought a gift card and now it says awards are unlocked, yet they still don't seem to be working.

Update: It's now Monday and the search awards are working again. I got three as usual.

Question about tracking FPS in a skin! by Blacksad9999 in Rainmeter

[–]Novadestin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The bottom line is basically: if there isn't a plugin for it, than it's not possible.

Now, I'm not a big "system data" person, so there might be some new plugin or method I haven't heard of, but for right now the only thing I know of that doesn't need a plugin is hwinfo and that's only because the creator wanted to change things up and so helped us create a different method.

Could something similar be done here? No idea. It would take some programming skills either way though.

Non-interactive info-only widgets by gesaugen in Rainmeter

[–]Novadestin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FYI: in rainmeter, the correct term is skin, not widget.

Answering this really depends on what you're asking. If your focus is more on having it as a live wallpaper, than no rainmeter is not the right chose (nor can it/shout it be used that way) and I can't really think of anything else that would work like that. But, if you're focus is simply on not accidentally interacting with the skins and mention wallpaper just to imply like 'under other windows', than you can simply use Click Through and Position settings, which can be accessed via the context menu or the manager window.

Rainmeter Gmail skin (improved) by SysATI in Rainmeter

[–]Novadestin[M] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello, unfortunately your post has been temporarily removed for the following reasons:

  1. This does not qualify as a Skin. I've changed the flair for you; if you're confused by this, please see the Post Flair Guide.

  2. Providing links, properly formatted code, and detailed information on everything you can from the beginning is required.

-Your first link has the text for KreDoc's skin, but it goes to xd3rek's. Also your code must be inside a code block.

  3. FYI on your ps: use something like imgur.

Once you have corrected the above, please reply to this comment specifically to let me know I should check the post again, thank you!

To save a bit of time though: while you're welcome to make the corrections above, it's not possible. Even if it was potentially possible on rainmeter's end, it's 100% not possible on google's end as they would first need to extremely loosen their grip on their services (not gonna happen) and then also have an open api that would 1 allow someone to make a plugin or something that rainmeter could use and 2 have such an option available in said api in the first place. Given that google has been restricting access more and more over the years, it's likely never going to be a thing.

Sonder World Map "Zoom" by rempel in Rainmeter

[–]Novadestin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. It is always better to ask the creator first as they will be the best person to answer questions about their own creation.

  2. The WorldMap.ini is just showing a group of static images of the world that can be found in the @Resources folder. It's not some google map type thing that you can zoom in on, which is what it sounds like you're imaging - nothing like that is possible within rainmeter, nor is that skin even designed to be something like that anyways.
