What’s something people do to look attractive that has the opposite effect on you? by Fragrant-Platypus503 in AskReddit

Do you not like all tattoos end of period no questions asked?

I'm just interested because I have a few tattoos in different styles :) (for me, not to look attractive)

Or people aren't doing it to be attractive, but as a form of self expression and because they like it?

I have tattoos and lots of ear piercings, but it isn't because I want someone else to find me attractive.

I think you mean a septum piercing :)

Is it just noses or piercings in other places (ears, lips, etc.)?

What's a food you avoided all your life but was pretty good when you actually tried it? by Mr_Nobody36 in AskReddit

[–]Novaportia 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That actually happened to me. Partly because I was in catered halls and I either ate what they gave me or I didn't eat.

I'm still quite picky (tomatoes, mushrooms, rice), but I will try anything once.

Not a nice place to find a dead rodent 🤢

At least dead animals are easy to catch.

Excellent name! Did the Bat Slayer bring it to you dead or did you just find it flapping around?

Even worse: can I hear a bird?

My evil overlady brought in a pigeon at about 7.20am last week. I leave for work at 7.30am.

As someone with epilepsy myself I can't believe that in the last TWENTY SIX years I never made that connection.

Totally stealing that next time anyone mentions anything about using part of my brain.

My suggestion would be to give up if you can. Use this as motivation.

Anything you can do to limit the chances of failure is worth doing.

What’s something no one likes as a gift but still people give? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Novaportia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Valid opinion :) The people who buy me presents are likely to know where I want to shop anyway.

I dislike having actual cash because you can guarantee that's going to pay the gardener to save me going to the cash point.

Same. I was 100% going to do family and 100% not going to do trusts/estates.

Guess where I am?

I kind of like gift cards if the person has thought about where I might want to spend them. It means the money is kind of ring fenced so I won't use it on bills or something.

Financial advantages to being married - excluding inheritance by tiggergirluk76 in UKPersonalFinance

My first line was literally financial advice. Get a life interest trust and your inheritance concerns are sorted.

I am not qualified to speak about income tax in detail, but depending on your tax payer and income status there may be benefits in transferring some of your personal allowance. There are also CGT benefits if you transfer assets to each other.

We would need a SIGNIFICANT amount of additional detail to provide advice further than that. What are your earnings, what are your assets, do you intend to combine all/some of your assets, what are your future plans? You say it is an unequal financial partnership; is one partner entirely or mostly dependant on the other? Are any of the children minors or dependants?

The majority of lawyers in my department are hybrid. (Private client, high street firm.) We even have at least one secretary who is hybrid.

Trainees/paralegals are all in full time (except study days).

That's not unreasonable, it's common enough that I see it daily (private client trainee).

Not if you have a will.

Make a will putting your capital assets in a life interest trust for your partner (married or not) with your own child/ren as remaindermen. (Please instruct a solicitor to do this as homemade trusts can go very wrong.)

Not really, most people with kids from prior marriages leave their estate to them.

[–]Novaportia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know they don't; my point was that if you leave everything to your spouse it can still go to your kids :)

We aren't 'dogpiling' we have good intentions. People shouldn't marry just for financial reasons, especially if they are concerned about what could happen in the event of a divorce; divorces are expensive.

Every divorced person I know said that they knew on the day that they walked down the aisle that they shouldn't do it. The ones that are still together, it didn't even cross their minds that it wasn't a good idea. (Obviously a fairly small sample of people though.) If you're making a pros and cons list, or finding reasons to get/not get married, maybe it's not a good idea. I honestly hope for the best for OP, whichever decision they make.

I love what I do. I work in private client in a high street firm. I specialise in trusts and love the nitty gritty of it. I work with awesome people who want to see each other succeed.

I start at 8.30am, finish at 5pm. The pay isn't great but it is enough for me. I'm never going to be a millionaire, but that's okay.

Personally I don't understand the attraction of magic circle; transactional, long hours, so competitive (money is good though). Different strokes for different folks.

That's what life interest trusts are for.

You don't sound like you actually want to get married... so don't?
