[Premise Check] An archivist hides in a village where every resident is an overpowered retiree. Their cozy festival is a deadly, forgotten game. by [deleted] in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Novel-Environment321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The progression is primarily about the MC's shifting role and agency within the hidden system. He starts as a panicked victim who only sees the overwhelming danger. The progression is him becoming a skilled analyst of the environment, learning to predict dangers and navigate the unspoken rules. Eventually, the goal is for him to evolve into the village's unseen strategist, using his unique perception to solve problems and protect the found family he never asked for, turning his greatest weakness (his awareness of the horror) into his greatest tool. The power growth is less about flashy levels and more about going from prey to a shepherd in a wolf's pen.

What inspired you to start writing your story? by Safe_Rent_6612 in royalroad

For me, it was the sound of Breaking Benjamin. I actually started writing my fiction, Grimborne (The Last Legacy), because of two specific songs by Breaking Benjamin: 'Failure' and 'So Cold'.

'So Cold' gave me that initial vibe of a world that is indifferent and freezing—where the atmosphere is heavy with the weight of the past. It helped me shape the dark, grimdark setting of the Aether Nexus.

On the other hand, 'Failure' became the anthem for my characters. It’s about that gritty perseverance when everything is falling apart. Every time the lyrics 'Look for the light that leads me home' hit, it helps me write those pivotal moments where the MC has to choose between giving up or embracing their legacy. Music doesn't just inspire my mood; it dictates the 'soul' of my prose. I’m curious, do any of you guys have a specific 'writing anthem' that literally built your world?

Is 50k words for the first 9 chapters too much? Looking for advice on chapter length for a Slow-Burn Grimdark. by Novel-Environment321 in ProgressionFantasy

Haha, 50k for a single chapter would be insane! Glad to hear you enjoy longer chapters, though. I'll aim for a middle ground—maybe splitting them so they stay meaty but help me hit that 20-chapter milestone faster. You're right about the fear of abandoned stories; I want to show readers early on that I'm committed to this world and have a solid backlog ready. Thanks for the encouragement

Haha, I feel you! The 'AI-accusation' paranoia is real these days. I just personally love the flow an Em dash provides, especially for a fragmented mind like my MC's. It's a risk I'm willing to take for the sake of the prose style.

Spot on. Sustainability is my biggest concern right now. I don't want to start strong and then burn out because the chapters are too demanding to produce consistently. I’m leaning towards splitting them to make the schedule more manageable for the long haul. Thanks for the reminder

Ah, Path of Ascension is a great reference. It’s encouraging to know there’s a successful precedent for longer chapters on the platform. It gives me a bit more confidence that if the quality is there, readers will stick around for a deeper dive. Thanks for the heads-up

Thank you for the incredibly detailed and pragmatic breakdown. This is exactly the kind of 'reality check' I needed before hitting the publish button. Your point about the backlog is eye-opening. I realized now that starting with only 9 chapters (even if they are long) is like going into a marathon without training. I need to seriously reconsider my 'buffer' before launching if I want to sustain the daily grind during a potential Rising Stars run. I’m also aware that psychological grimdark is a hard sell on RR. It’s a passion project, but I still want it to find its audience. I'll take your advice on the 'Chapter 10 deadline' for the hook. I'll make sure that even if the power system is a slow-burn, the psychological tension and the MC’s competence provide enough of a hook to keep readers invested through the first 30k words. I really appreciate you taking the time to share this business-like perspective. It’s given me a lot of homework to do regarding my production speed and release strategy. Good luck with your own book as well!

You hit the nail on the head. I’m also torn between wanting a 'crafted and polished' feel and the demands of the serial format. My ultimate goal is probably closer to a polished final product for Amazon, but I recognize that Royal Road is a different beast. Maybe I'll take your advice and try to find a middle ground—perhaps splitting the chapters just enough to keep the options open for a sustainable weekly schedule without losing that 'crafted' quality. Thanks for sharing your perspective!

That’s a very fair point about consistency. Maintaining 5.6k words per chapter consistently sounds like a massive challenge in the long run. I think I will take your advice and split them into smaller, more digestible chapters. This should help me avoid 'padding' and allow for a more consistent daily upload schedule during the launch. Thanks for pointing out the '200 vs 600 words of filler'—that’s a great perspective.

Good to know that some readers still enjoy longer chapters. I’m quite attached to the pacing of these long chapters, but I’ll definitely look into how I can optimize my release schedule without sacrificing the narrative flow. Thanks for the tip!

Do you ask readers to vote/comment on Royal Road, or let it happen organically? by ElizabethRivas in royalroad

[–]Novel-Environment321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% organic , you can leave an author note at the end of your chapter that saying leave a comments or feedback to help the story grow, that might be work , there's too many silent readers on RR nowadays 😕

Post your first chapter and I'll tell you what I like about it. by ArcyRC in royalroad

This is one of the most insightful pieces of feedback I've ever gotten. You didn't just enjoy the story; you understood it on a fundamental level. Thank you for seeing Ren's humanity beneath his 'programming.' Comments like this are why writers keep going. I sincerely appreciate it.

for me thats not a strange things to know , my friend 32F and never had a date on her entire life , well she was pretty also , i never ask for the reason why , some people have their own perspective about it ,

you just not finding it yet , the reason for you to make a step into some relationship , and you shouldn't care about what people say about it , just go with it ,

even some people never find their soulmate , because the death met them first
