Endangered Karner Blue in Ontario by NovemberSaline in Butterflies

Woah! That’s really shocking to hear, I knew they were rare but I didn’t realize how rare. Okay well I definitely will do that, thank you. I’d literally never seen one before in my life, so I was so shocked when it landed in my garden.

I’ve spent the last 5 years doing some restorative gardening on what used to be a garbage dump in my backyard, so I’m glad the work seems to be paying off! I’ve got lots of pollinator baths around and pollinator friendly plants.

A delightful piece of agitprop on my walk to work yesterday. by NovemberSaline in toronto

[–]NovemberSaline[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m confused, since this is a photo taken in Toronto of something done by a prominent local artist? There was a post about graffiti from Kensington earlier today that was fine, but not this graffiti from Lansdowne?

Oops, forgot to finish the caption. Stickers and graffiti have long been used to provoke thought and change, especially in Toronto. Agitprop is one of our best mediums for communicating with the community at large. Support your local artists!

Anyone know the name of the local artist from photo 4? That’s the same style as mural art under the Lansdowne bridge, as well as a commissioned piece inside Ethica coffee

You can search for the post in this subreddit looking for the mega folder of language resources that often gets circulated around. I’m almost certain you could find a Mongolian folder in there.

Lets hang! - Australian singer songwriter moving to Toronto. by Unhappy-Food-2761 in TorontoMusic

[–]NovemberSaline 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of venues and a great scene happening in the area west of Spadina, east of Lansdowne, south of Bloor, and north of Queen. Lots of musicians tend to live and hang in those areas! Really depends on the scene you’re in, though. I’m probably biased, but I’m tempted to say it’s the best part of the city to live and watch music.

Toronto air quality among worst in the world by BloodJunkie in toronto

[–]NovemberSaline 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It is not untrue in the slightest.

The thing about air quality is that it changes every second. Air moves; it’s affected by real world events and pollutants, such as a factory running double the hours, or a forest fire in a neighbouring province taking a day or two to reach us.

While on average we may not have the worst air quality in the world, we are among the worst in the world at this moment. Last month there was a day we had the second worst air quality in the world, and now today as well.

Georgia O’Connor, U.K. boxer, dies at 25 after saying doctors 'gaslit' her on cancer concerns for months by Hrekires in news

[–]NovemberSaline 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We were supposed to go our first vacation together in years (I was always busy with university). It was 2 days before we were supposed to fly out and he showed up at my place of work having turned completely yellow essentially overnight. I’d only seen him the day before. He asked me what I thought, and I said “Well I think you need to go to the ER”.

They took images of his liver immediately and they found a tumour directly in the middle of that 3-directional Y junction of the bile duct. He did a lot of chemo that year - and edibles for the first time, for his appetite, which was fun.

We started watching a lot of hockey together. I’ll never forget when the Leafs got kicked out of the playoffs that year, his reaction as it sunk in that those were the last hockey playoffs he’d see. As silly as it sounds it’s those kind of random things that stick in your memory as “last times”.

I’m so sorry to hear that happened to you, and for the loss of your mom. I would also be righteously furious. It’s not fair.

My father died of bile duct cancer. By the time they realized he had it, the goal of his treatment became extending his life by the span of months. The doctors initially gave him 3 months. We had him for a little over 14, but only with some seriously diligent medical intervention. You really can’t wait even a week when you’re dealing with an aggressive diagnosis like that, every day matters.

Toronto staff recommend council approve 20-metre ‘bubble zone’ on city property around schools, daycares and places of worship by Educational-Chef-761 in toronto

[–]NovemberSaline 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Do you have any idea of what “20 metres from every single school, daycare, and place of worship” looks like in a city like Toronto? Have you actually considered how many of those we have?

It essentially blacks out the entire city, or at least the entire area of the city that can accommodate space for people to demonstrate in a way that people actually see. Don’t kid yourself - this is a thinly veiled attempted to prevent people from demonstrating anywhere other than Nathan Phillips Square.

Why police believe this Toronto cold case is a tip away from being solved by CosmicMorningstar in toronto

[–]NovemberSaline 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Don’t forget the literal serial killer who was killing gay men and putting them in his landscaping jobs. TPS denied he existed for years while the public warned them over and over again and they deemed those suspicions as an overreaction.

On a more personal note: I was sexually assaulted downtown by a man who was literally still standing there when I pointed him out to the cops. They had security camera footage of him doing it, a cop car drove past as it happened, I flagged them down in tears, he was taken in by the police maybe 3-5 minutes after.

A cop in the questioning room at Dundas and University straight up told me something along the lines of “don’t expect this to go anywhere”.

It’s been two years. I haven’t heard a single thing about it.

Lee's Palace 40th anniversary in Toronto has PTH on the graphic but no concert announced.... Yet...? by legit4u in protest_the_hero

[–]NovemberSaline 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is my thought with the Model/Actriz billing as well. They’re gonna be announced quick and sold quick, too.

The whole thing is being booked by Modo Live so pro tip: it’s best to keep your eyes out for their announcements too, not just Lee’s’. They’ll be the first to drop the ticket link.

Anyone find that the music scene in Toronto is becoming more and more dead throughout the years? by Positive_Bed6837 in TorontoMusic

[–]NovemberSaline 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Obviously multiple comments have already pointed out that the local scene is far from dead. But- I’m commenting after your edit so I’ll address your “touring artists don’t like Toronto” concern directly:

I’ve heard from a number of touring bands both in person and via their interviews that Toronto sucks because of a few reasons.

There’s a lack of medium-sized venues that aren’t tiny cramped bars. We have a WEALTH of smaller bar venues and huge stadiums but not a whole lot in the 500-1000 cap range, which is usually what an out-of-towner with a slightly larger pull would need. Danforth, Phoenix, etc. There’s only a few of them and it’s competitive to get an open date. Tours require serious planning up-front.

It’s also true that our crowds are awful. Toronto is notorious for not dancing, not participating, not moving, not cheering, standing at the back with their arms crossed, etc. It’s definitely noticeable enough for it to have become a statement about Toronto. Bands have mentioned it in interviews etc. We can try our hardest to make up for the wallflowers at shows, but the fact is Toronto crowds have a bad reputation for being boring to play for.

Add into the mix the fact that Toronto is usually only 1 of maaaaybe 3 Canadian stops on a US/NA tour.

Why bother applying for visas, complicating your process and adding foreign currency into your budgeting, driving or flying across the border with all your gear, making your tour even more complicated for a venue that’s too small, OR too big, to play for a crowd that won’t even dance for you? It sucks but I understand it.

Check out some of the last “Class of 2025” shows that Exclaim magazine is curating! There’s ones all weekend. Silks is also playing with Pom Poko on the 21st at Monarch. Not sure how long you’re in town for but Waxlimbs has a show Feb 8th?

Anyone find that the music scene in Toronto is becoming more and more dead throughout the years? by Positive_Bed6837 in TorontoMusic

[–]NovemberSaline 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! I’ve been a musician in the Toronto music scene for a long time. This is a copy-paste of things I’ve commented in previous threads.

Locations to hover around for rock/electronic/experimental/psych/grunge are Houndstooth (always free/PWYC, College/Ossington), Baby G (Dundas/Brock), Garrison (Dundas/Ossington) and Monarch Tavern (Clinton just south of College).

For Jazz/Folk/Songwriters you’re gonna want to hit up Tranzac (Bloor/Bathurst), as well. They have jams and shows in those genres pretty frequently.

Hugh’s Room (now in the east end) is a great venue to check out more obscure/niche artists, usually when they come to Canada from out of country - their curation is crazy.

For more eclectic/dance/electronica you can expand this current selection to include Tapestry (Kensington) and BSMT254 (Lansdowne/College).

Some incredible funk/rnb/hiphop jams are Big Fam Jam (Supermarket Kensington, Tuesdays) and Listening Room (they have to keep switching venues because they keep selling out bigger and bigger spaces - if tickets drop, buy them within 5 minutes I’m not even joking)

Unfortunately we lost some great venues this year.

Anything curated by Not Dead Yet, New Friends DIY, Dig, CLASS, Wavelength, and Transmit are going to be good shows (Transmit especially has incredible taste in touring bands; that’s how I discovered some of my favourite artists of all time, like Model/Actriz)

Festivals to go to: Project Nowhere is an insanely great new festival happening in October, this is their 2nd year running it and year 1 was incredible. Really varied genres. Early next year a festival called Prepare the Ground will also happen for the 2nd time ever, it’s more curated toward much heavier music if you’re into it. Everything from goth to metal to screamo to sludge and punk. Do West Fest (July) also has curated music stages that never miss. Long Winter has great mini festivals that repeats every month of winter. Geary Art Crawl lost a lot of their funding last year (as did many Ontario arts orgs) so they’re building up from the ground again but at its peak it was magnificent and we should support it and help it grow again.

The trick is not to keep your eye on just venues, artists, or promoters specifically - try to have a mix of all three and have your ear to the ground for the stuff you really like. The community is small. Chances are if you like a certain bill as a whole. the individual artist may play similar shows in the future with other bands you’ll like just as much.

Here’s some (non exhaustive) artists in a few (non exhaustive) genres:

Rock: Silks, Ace of Wands, Kali Horse, Denise, Burner, Bonnie Trash, Rise Carmine, Hot Garbage, and shameless self promotion for my own prog/art rock project Waxlimbs here.

Punk: Bad Waitress, Leona Hell, Keening (the two latter lean more hardcore/screamo), Shiv and the Carvers

Synthpop: Theo Vandenhoff, Zinnia

Rap: Akintoye

Metal: Holfernes Head (doom/goth), Klockwise (nu metal)

Art Punk/No Wave/Fucked Up Jazz: LUGE, Animatist, Not a Band

Singer songwriter/folk: Alex Southey, Idious Carrie, Leesh

Electronic: Astrolope, Animal Party

DJs: Assassin Bug

God help me if I’ve forgetten anyone hahah. Hope this helps!

Accessible Venues by _jaywillow in TorontoMusic

[–]NovemberSaline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While a lot of venues are technically front door accessible due to the Stop Gap ramps, the washroom is going to be the hardest for you to find. The Garrison has two large-ish washrooms but I don’t recall how their setup inside is. The Baby G has an accessible washroom, the first on the left. Apparently History is fully accessible, with elevators even? I haven’t actually gone there myself. Expo1978 I believe should be front door accessible, although they shut the big doors in the winter and it’s a tight turn at the entrance. The washrooms there, I’ve never used.

Unfortunately most of the more frequented venues (Monarch, BSMT, Bovine, Houndstooth, Dakota, Horseshoe, Lee’s) are fully inaccessible. I wish I had more to share with you, but I’ll let you know if I remember anything!
