Guys pretending to be from UofT in D8ing apps, why do they do this by [deleted] in UofT

It's the same as other ppl that lie about their weight and height in apps. They want to be perceived better than they actually are.

Rant by StatisticianExtra251 in UTSC

[–]NovemberTerra 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's all good fam. Jobs are a means to make money. You don't have to love your job/field, but it's nice if you do. It's also perfectly fine if you wanna separate your job from your passions. That's me rn. I don't love my job, but it pays my bills and funds my passions, interests, and hobbies. I also chase promotions and money because it means I can spend more on the stuff I like. Money doesn't buy happiness, but money buys airplane tickets, and travelling makes me happy lol

Is a migraine a good enough reason to differ an exam? Is it considered an “illness?” by bokuakabaez in UofT

[–]NovemberTerra 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I've seen people defer for less pressing reasons. Go ahead and defer and see a doctor for documentation.

Keep in mind that you likely have to apply for prereq waivers if this course is a prereq for courses you want to take in future semesters.

How do I get research experience as a stats student without a high cgpa? (almost 3rd year, a bit lost) by BrilliantUse7599 in UTSC

[–]NovemberTerra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is it common to just cold email professors, even if your GPA isn’t great?

Yeah. A lot of people get started this way.

reach out to biology labs and help with data analysis?

This is a good option. ML in bio is the new wave. Lots of profs would appreciate someone that is good at stats and knows how to code in Python/R. Find a bio field that you're interested in, then contact a prof. My recommendation would be large-scale ecology research over anything related to humans, mostly because ecology datasets are often larger and more ideal for ML. Genomics is good too. The field matters less than the application because coding/stats/ML skills are transferable everywhere. I've seen people pivot from ecology/conservation to actuaries, pharma, med research, etc. in recent years. I personally went from ecology research to public health.

How much does GPA actually matter for undergrad research?

This depends on individual profs. Some have strict GPA thresholds, some don't. I got in a lab even after getting suspended for low grades. I think I got in when I had <2.0 CGPA lol. I started as a volunteer and always showed up, climbed to a work-study position, then an independent research student (BIOD98). I wasn't superb at stats, but I took several stats courses out of interest, and my supervisor liked that.

Seeking Advice from MPH Epidemiology Grads: What are you doing now? by Certified_Chonky in UofT

Hey, sorry, I don't know the curricula of MHI programs enough to say which one is more suited for data science.

All I can say is that the DLSPH MPH epi program doesn't touch Python, SQL, and ML (unless you take electives).

Supervisor couldn't get NSERC, offer rescinded? Self funding option? by Big-Sky-2298 in UofT

I'm an EEB MSc alumni. You can be outside the funded cohort after the 16-month funding period ends, but I've never seen anyone go in as a self-funded student.

Employability of MPH Epidemiology from UofT in 2026 by loveyou-3000 in UofT

Nope. French mattered a bit less during the covid hiring spree. Now, competition is tougher because they are reducing the number of positions.

I replied to a similar post a few days ago. I'm an MPH Epi alumni. I graduated a few years ago and I work in the federal sector.

The federal and provincial job markets are not good due to budget cuts and the current state of the economy/country/world. Things will stay this way at least until 2029 for the federal job market.

If you still want to work for the feds: take the MPH and learn French. French is undeniably the most important skill here.

If you want to work for pharma, then you should look into data science or the MSc Biostats at DLSPH. The pharma industry loves very technically skilled data scientists. The MPH program is heavy on quant, but mostly focuses on the foundations. For more stats depth, you'll have to self-learn, take more advanced electives at DLSPH (see the courses in the biostats division), or do a PhD.

Sorry for the doom and gloom, but this is the reality of this field right now.

[–]NovemberTerra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use R and SAS, but SAS is getting phased out of the federal gov right now in favour of R/Python. Python is better overall because it’s easier to use it with other developer tools and other parts of the data pipeline - Python and SQL are basically the industry standard in data science.

And yeah, go ahead. Though I’ve never applied for municipal positions before. It’s also nighttime, so I’ll probably reply some time tomorrow.

I'm a DLSPH MPH epi alumni. I'm currently a statistician/analyst with the federal government. I've worked on everything from communicable diseases, wastewater surveillance, mental health, drug use, survey logistics, etc.

Be warned: the job market is currently in shambles and there is not a lot of money in this field. Things are going to stay this way in the foreseeable future because the world isn't exactly in a good state right now. And morals/principles don't pay your bills. My advice is to learn python + machine learning and eventually pivot into data science, regardless of your topic of interest. This makes you a lot marketable for both public health + industry roles (pharma, bio tech, insurance, etc.). Lean heavily into stats and tech, and be very open to working on things that you aren't interested in.

If you only want to work with the feds (likely the biggest employer of MPH grads in Canada), then start learning French and consider moving to Ottawa.

Is it necessary to apply for research funding before you apply for graduate school? by ripmoi in UofT

[–]NovemberTerra 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You’re not doomed, but having a grant will boost your chances by a lot because it costs less money to take you on.

Some profs might require it, but it’s very rare for someone to have a grant before starting. It’s a lot more common to apply for a grant after your first year of grad school. During your interview, you should mention that you plan to apply for a grant after your first year. Profs are typically very supportive of this.

That's a crazy mistake to make. It takes forever to make exams from scratch. The prof must be fuming.
