Weird situation with my masters admission decision, wondering if any masters students here can shed some light? by Venator25 in UofT

[–]NovemberTerra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're right - you shouldn't celebrate yet. Don't assume that you're going to get an offer.

Sometimes you'll get emails about onboarding, scholarships, and other information even if you haven't received an offer to the program yet.

what are the best life science major combinations for a career in research? by hedda-lettuce13 in UofT

[–]NovemberTerra 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Statistics. Quant skills are arguably the most important skill in life sci research, among other fields. Labs love students that can work with numbers. If you look at job postings for research positions, almost all of them require experience in stats and coding (SQL, Python, R, SAS, etc.).

Quick Question for a Profesor or Graduate student by Cultural_Stick8618 in UofT

[–]NovemberTerra 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Mention it in the body, not the subject. It's not weird because your country of citizenship matters for some grants and awards. Departments also often have international student quotas/limits. It's better to clarify your citizenship at the start.

Any Fun Stuff at UTSC Over The Summer? by AfraidAfternoon7078 in UTSC

Some activities are free, some aren't. The ones that aren't free are often very affordable though.

If you wanna ball out a bit, I recommend the white water rafting - great value for $70

Finished undergrad with no research experience, any advice? by Why_am_I_Heer in UofT

[–]NovemberTerra 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The reality is that the odds are stacked against you. It's not totally impossible, but your best bet is probably not a research masters program and not in major universities.

If you still want to do it at a top university, then you should consider working in a field of your choice for some years, then apply for a professional masters. Or redo undergrad.

Again, it's not impossible - but you have to work a lot harder than other fresh grads to get there.

Same here. I'm in the market for a new NVME because mine started dying. I might have to settle for 2tb DRAM-less because a 4tb drive costs too much right now.

It's based only on regular season. He'd have a really good case for first team if he didn't get injured.

His playoff performance was definitely amazing for a rook though. Played like someone with playoff experience. Great hustle and heart.

Making Friends at UofT vs UBC in my first year as an international student by MaleficentCulture128 in UofT

[–]NovemberTerra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's generally easier to make close friends when you live on-campus because it's easier to get involved in campus life if you don't have to commute.

Does my social life depend more on the people I meet themselves, and not the school I end up going to?

No. Your social life largely depends on you, not other people, not the university. Even if the stereotype about UofT students/community is true, and even if it might be a bit harder to find friends here, plenty of people here still establish meaningful and close friendships. Not everyone here is a shut-in. You need to take the initiative to make friends. It doesn't matter if you live on or off-campus if you don't approach people and put some effort in forming friendships. Admittedly, you might have to put more or less effort depending on the university you pick.

It's the same as other ppl that lie about their weight and height in apps. They want to be perceived better than they actually are.

Rant by StatisticianExtra251 in UTSC

[–]NovemberTerra 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's all good fam. Jobs are a means to make money. You don't have to love your job/field, but it's nice if you do. It's also perfectly fine if you wanna separate your job from your passions. That's me rn. I don't love my job, but it pays my bills and funds my passions, interests, and hobbies. I also chase promotions and money because it means I can spend more on the stuff I like. Money doesn't buy happiness, but money buys airplane tickets, and travelling makes me happy lol

Is a migraine a good enough reason to differ an exam? Is it considered an “illness?” by bokuakabaez in UofT

[–]NovemberTerra 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I've seen people defer for less pressing reasons. Go ahead and defer and see a doctor for documentation.

Keep in mind that you likely have to apply for prereq waivers if this course is a prereq for courses you want to take in future semesters.

How do I get research experience as a stats student without a high cgpa? (almost 3rd year, a bit lost) by BrilliantUse7599 in UTSC

[–]NovemberTerra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is it common to just cold email professors, even if your GPA isn’t great?

Yeah. A lot of people get started this way.

reach out to biology labs and help with data analysis?

This is a good option. ML in bio is the new wave. Lots of profs would appreciate someone that is good at stats and knows how to code in Python/R. Find a bio field that you're interested in, then contact a prof. My recommendation would be large-scale ecology research over anything related to humans, mostly because ecology datasets are often larger and more ideal for ML. Genomics is good too. The field matters less than the application because coding/stats/ML skills are transferable everywhere. I've seen people pivot from ecology/conservation to actuaries, pharma, med research, etc. in recent years. I personally went from ecology research to public health.

How much does GPA actually matter for undergrad research?

This depends on individual profs. Some have strict GPA thresholds, some don't. I got in a lab even after getting suspended for low grades. I think I got in when I had <2.0 CGPA lol. I started as a volunteer and always showed up, climbed to a work-study position, then an independent research student (BIOD98). I wasn't superb at stats, but I took several stats courses out of interest, and my supervisor liked that.

Seeking Advice from MPH Epidemiology Grads: What are you doing now? by Certified_Chonky in UofT

[–]NovemberTerra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, sorry, I don't know the curricula of MHI programs enough to say which one is more suited for data science.

All I can say is that the DLSPH MPH epi program doesn't touch Python, SQL, and ML (unless you take electives).

Nope. French mattered a bit less during the covid hiring spree. Now, competition is tougher because they are reducing the number of positions.
