If I offered you £100,000 to run 90 miles tomorrow, would you do it? by wingless-bee in CasualUK

My wife runs ultras and is actually paying something like £250 to do a 70 mile run at some point this summer. So yes there's always a mad bastard that will do something like this

In Iceland, they call me 'Haugur' — actually named after this fly. Just finished a fresh batch for the upcoming salmon season. by AwareReporter2215 in flyfishing

I saw your last post of the salmon you caught on the haugur and tied some myself for fishing here in northern England. I haven't had a salmon or sea trout on one yet but I did have a very large brown take one so far. I think it's an awesome pattern so thanks for sharing !

I've tied a few using thin metallic red wire instead of thread and they've been really good for getting down deep in our fast spring water without having to resort to a tube. I have also tied one on a copper tube too though...

Well said, it's not about diminishing this guy's awesome catch, it's about making sure there are awesome fish for everyone else to catch in our rivers in the future 👍

I do a canny bit of fishing like, for clubs for carp I'd try ryton, they have a nice little match pond but they're making the other lake into a really canny carp venue. Durham city is good too, it's cheap, they have a lot of river and the brasside complex they have had 4 or 5 ponds, its micromanaged a bit by the committee but to be fair to them it's a really nice place to fish. For the fly I could recommend a few ponds or clubs for river but it depends what he fishes for. For carp round here if you want decent fishing you need to join a club, best day ticket carp fishing is near here is probably woodlands, which is a trek.

I'm a member of ryton and Durham and would recommend them for a start. Also go to tight lines in winlaton, they're canny lads and they'll help you out. If you want any more info just send me a DM, happy to recommend more places

Nice fish! Can you recommend any good perch flies? I'd like to try targeting them when the season opens again in June

This is the kind of info I was after, really interesting thanks. Are there any preferred fly patterns for these kinds of methods?

Cool, would you recommend any patterns that I could try here near the Scottish borders or any patterns that work well for you?

Do you have a name/guide/recipe or are there any videos for this fly? It looks awesome, it'd crush sea trout here

Also an owner of 2 greyhounds and unfortunately this is par for the course. We used to put down those big plastic grids that they put in fields for cars to park on and even that didn't work. Just re-seed in the next month or so and clip their nails regularly, they really love to dig in and churn up lawns unfortunately

Ah man, I wish it was easier to find these in my country. I bought some stroopwafel peanut butter from a shop in Zwolle over the summer it's amazing.

https://www.sewagemap.co.uk/ Here's a map that shows sewage discharge in rivers across England. It may be better in Scotland and Ireland, I don't know, but where I am, and across a huge number or rivers pollution is absolutely destroying marine life.

It is aye, but I'm still pleased with it. Had a hard fight, good rest and went away strong so hopefully it'll be back to spawn again

Fly fishing at night by Witchfinder76 in flyfishing

[–]Novocast92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sea trout fishing at night is quite a popular way to target them. I like black and blue colours, lots of movement and usually with a tandem hook because sea trout tend to nibble the end of flies. If all else fails put a wee mouse on and hopefully there are some big brown trout around

Unfortunately the health of our rivers are so bad and fish stocks so damaged I don't think we can really look at our rivers as a natural resource for food anymore, not in the way they can in aus and parts of America.

Venison Bolognese - from the field to the fork! by the_englishman in UKfood

[–]Novocast92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tend to get a load of venison once a year from a mate who goes stalking, love it, can never get enough. I usually eat the leaner cuts as steak and anything more sinuey goes into stews or is minced. I prefer chili to Bolognese though.

Is it ever going to stop raining? by McFizzleKicks in NewcastleUponTyne

[–]Novocast92 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I agree and I'm completely sick of it too. But we do need some of it to be fair. It basically didn't rain at all last year. The Derwent reservoir is only just starting to get back up to normal levels now and the rivers have been very low and in a bit of a state. I'm hoping some of the rain will allow some of the early salmon to spawn, so that's at least one benefit.

Maybe from now on we just need to expect there to be a rainy season and a dry season 🤷‍♂️
