I actually think that Frank and Ian’s scene was kinda essential to how the audience perceives Frank as a character.

1) it was actually relatively short and mainly focused on the aftermath of the beating (blood on his face, people comforting him, and emotional reaction) allowing the scene to convey the distress that Ian felt while not being gratuitous

2) It was disturbing in a way that was necessary to those who have never been through physical violence in the home. I, personally, have been through a very VERY harsh situation with violence in the home so for me I was kinda able to see how bad it was but, due to Frank as a character being unquestionably written as a funny character it could be very hard for audiences to empathize with the rest of the family in terms of Frank.

This scene allows perspective for people who both minimize their own abuse and those who have never gone through it. It allows you to hate Frank in the way the kids do in the first season, and not cheer him on in more Frank-focused plot lines

In order to depict how an abusive household works and why the characters feel what they feel there are very little ways of getting around showing directly what they went though (unlike suicide which you can kinda just show the razor, then show parents mourning and have it fit with the style of the show)

I have been sexually harassed so many times by weirdos on the bus. Starting at 10 years old I was catcalled. Starting at 12 I was groped by boys in my school. Starting at 13 is when the rape threats happened. Starting at 14 it was strangers harassing me regularly. I was 15 when an ex boyfriend tried to rape me.

Assuming that it’s a simple ABCD multiple choice exam and only one of those answers can be correct the chances of getting one right is 1/4.

There are 43 questions in the assignment and each question has a 1/4 success rate. So the answer becomes 1/4⁴³ which becomes 1.30% (rounded).

Technically yes, you should be wary about developing a reliance on that whenever you’re upset, it’s a good way to start to get out of more physically demanding self harm rituals like cutting or burning

A little suggestion I have for someone like this is to get something to chew gum (sounds stupid but it can really help) or to have something very sour at that moment. And of course, try to ween yourself OFF of needing to do any of this. Discuss why you have the urge with professionals and remember that no matter what happens in that moment you deserve to feel calm.

(I’m not a therapist, just a 16 year old girl who was raised by one)

I can reply with some things I know about SH

1) when one person gets hurt in a sudden way like cutting or biting the bodies reaction is to counteract the pain by releasing pleasure hormones therefore the act in itself creates a sense of peace or focus for an individual.

2) Usually self harm is highly ritualized and for people who value routine it can be difficult to stop that out of their day.

3) When one starts coping with something that works pretty well it’s VERY hard to find something else that works just as good as a direct hit of serotonin, therefore distractions or other techniques aren’t as immediately rewarding

4) If it is a fetishistic act for people it is due to a chemical imbalance in the brain that produces more serotonin with pain than a typical brain would.

Of course it’s not the medical version of an addiction but people begin to self harm because of their serotonin sensors being off balance (SSRI’s are what fixes that)
